Celebrating the Humble King: Palm Sunday Reflections
Summary
In today's gathering, we celebrated the dedication of Luna Magookin, a joyous occasion that brought together family, friends, and our church community. This dedication is a reminder of the blessings and responsibilities we have as a community to nurture and support the young lives among us. We are grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside families like Ian and Naomi's, sharing in their joys and challenges. As we dedicate Luna, we commit to being a community that models the love of Christ, providing a nurturing environment for her to grow in faith and love.
This week, we also reflect on the significance of Holy Week, a time to remember Jesus' journey to the cross and the profound love and sacrifice it represents. We have several events planned, including gatherings in Toll Cross Park and a baptism service, to celebrate and remember the essence of Easter. These events are not just traditions but opportunities to deepen our faith and community bonds.
We also shared in the miraculous recovery of Dean, who, after undergoing brain surgery, has experienced remarkable healing. His testimony is a powerful reminder of God's presence and power in our lives, even in the most challenging circumstances. As a church, we rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. We continue to pray for Stacey and her family as they navigate the difficult news of her mother's illness, trusting in God's comfort and healing.
In dedicating Luna, we are reminded of the importance of our role in shaping the lives of the next generation. We are called to model love, joy, and peace, teaching our children to honor God and live lives that reflect His goodness. This dedication is not just a ceremony but a commitment to support and nurture Luna and all the children in our community.

Quotes
Good morning, everybody. Good morning. It's so good to welcome you to church this morning. We have lots of people missing today who are on holiday, and we are praying for God's blessing over them. We pray they'll come back rested, but we're blessed this morning with lots of visitors as well, because we have a dedication this morning. We are going to be dedicating Luna Magookin, so we are really thankful for that. And so if you're here for the dedication, just want to give you a warm welcome, especially today. [00:21:11]
And this is quite miraculous. So we prayed in here two weeks ago for Dean going into surgery on the Monday, and within a couple of days after brain surgery, he was walking. He's been able to talk again. He is absolutely going from strength to strength, and even having an infection, he was still able to get home within the two weeks, basically, which has been, well, within the week, which was incredible. [00:26:02]
And we are absolutely a church who rejoices with one another, and a church that grieves with one another. And we have been through some difficult times in the last wee while, but we are still continuing to pray for people who are having tough times. And we want to pray for Stacey this morning. Her family got difficult news. We know we've been praying for her mum, and last week on Friday, she got news that she has stage four cancer. [00:27:44]
But Father, there are so many difficult circumstances in our church right now, and we've got people who are grieving, people who've had losses, people who are having difficult times, and we remember them before you right now. And Lord, we particularly bring Stacey and the family before you. We remember Helen, her mum. And we pray, Father, for your healing on Helen. I pray, God, that she will have healing in ways that she would never have even imagined she would know your healing touch. [00:28:54]
And I pray that her mum will come to know you in the midst of this. Lord, would you draw close to this family in the way that they're grieving. Thank you, God, that you are the God who is close to the brokenhearted and you can give strength where we find we have none. And so I pray that she will have your strength today. And, Lord, we are giving thanks and we are rejoicing for Dean. [00:29:40]
Well, we are delighted to be dedicating Luna this morning. If you are here today specifically for this moment, then we just want to say welcome. We're giving thanks for this family today. And it really is a joy to be part of these special moments in people's lives. It's one of the real blessings of the church that we can take time like this to celebrate, to give thanks together, and to acknowledge God's blessings when we see it, particularly within a family. [00:30:26]
So there are three things that we do this morning as part of this dedication ceremony. The first is to give thanks to God for Luna for the blessing and the gift that she is. The second is to take a few moments to pray for Luna and for Thomas and for both of you as parents as well. And we'll do that in a few moments. To dedicate a child is to bring them before God, to give thanks to God for them and to pray for God's blessing on them. [00:31:26]
When we pray for the blessing of God to be on our child, we're also acknowledging that we have a significant role in fostering that blessing. Like we've said, our lives will contribute to the shaping of their lives. What they see in us, they will often welcome for themselves. And God longs to enable us in our parenting. It's a tough role and we need God's help. And so I want to encourage you both. Teach Luna early to honour God. [00:33:16]
Will you also commit yourselves to support this family in a way that supports love, nurtures trust, and protects goodness? If so, will you answer, we will. Thank you so much. And then all of us who are gathered here today have a part to play in Luna's life. And we want to assure Naomi and Ian that we are with them in this. [00:35:03]
As the church, Luna will look to us as her example as she grows up. We model the love of Christ to the children in this place. And that is a responsibility that we all must take seriously. Whether you have children here or not, we all have a responsibility to the children in this church. Will you be willing to commit yourself to this task? If so, would you please stand as a sign of your love and support for them? [00:35:57]
Heavenly Father, we pray that you would take this child into your loving care. And abundantly enrich her life with your heavenly grace and your beautiful presence. I pray that she would know you close all the days of her life. Bring her safely through the difficulties and temptations that she will face as a child and as a teenager. [00:36:22]
We give you thanks for Thomas also. This is a family which has known much blessing. And I pray for your blessing on him. I thank you, God, for all the ways he already loves and cares for his little sister. Would you continue to encourage and bless him in that? We pray for Naomi and Ian that you would uphold them with your loving care and inner strength so that with wise advice and holy example, they may faithfully live out their responsibility both to Luna and Thomas as well as to you.
