Jesus Christ is the foundation upon which the church is built, and nothing—not even the gates of hell—can overcome what He has established. The church is not a human invention but a divine movement, begun by Christ Himself and sustained by His power through the ages. Each believer is part of this triumphant church, called to remember the faithfulness of God and the unbreakable promise that His church will endure. As we look back on the story of our congregation and the global church, we are reminded that our mission and hope are anchored in the unchanging truth of who Jesus is: the Christ, the Son of the living God. [01:39:39]
Matthew 16:15-18 (ESV)
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Reflection: In what ways can you boldly stand on the truth of Christ as the foundation of your life and your church this week, even when you face opposition or discouragement?
God calls His people to remember the ways He has led, provided, and performed wonders in their lives and in the life of the church. Recalling God’s faithfulness in the past gives us courage and gratitude in the present, reminding us that He is always at work—even in the ordinary and unexpected moments. As you reflect on your own journey and the story of this church, let gratitude rise for the “God moments” that have shaped your faith and community. Remembering is not just nostalgia; it is fuel for faith and hope for what God will do next. [01:42:17]
Deuteronomy 8:2 (ESV)
And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
Reflection: What is one specific “God moment” from your life or your church’s history that you can thank God for today, and how does it encourage you to trust Him for the future?
While it is important to remember God’s works, we are also called to let go of the past—both its successes and its failures—so that we can move forward into the new things God has for us. Holding onto past hurts, mistakes, or even glories can paralyze us and keep us from living fully in the present or casting vision for the future. God invites us to learn from yesterday but not to be bound by it, offering forgiveness and freedom so we can press on toward His calling. [01:53:13]
Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Reflection: Is there a past hurt, mistake, or even a success that you need to release to God today so you can move forward in faith? What step can you take to let it go?
God’s forgiveness is complete—He blots out our transgressions and remembers our sins no more. As recipients of such grace, we are called to extend forgiveness to others and to ourselves, refusing to let the past hold us or others in bondage. True freedom and unity in the church come when we choose to forgive as Christ forgave us, letting go of bitterness and embracing reconciliation. This is not always easy, but it is essential for a triumphant, healthy church and a vibrant walk with God. [01:58:30]
Isaiah 43:25 (ESV)
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
Reflection: Who is someone you need to forgive—or perhaps ask forgiveness from—so that you can walk in the freedom and unity God desires for His people?
The future of the church depends not on a few leaders, but on every believer stepping up to serve, share the gospel, and say, “Here I am, send me.” God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways—sometimes the most spiritually significant act is a simple one, like welcoming someone or sharing your faith. The fields are ripe for harvest, and God is calling you to be part of His ongoing work. Will you answer the call to be available, to serve, and to make an eternal difference in someone’s life? [02:08:00]
Isaiah 6:8 (ESV)
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
Reflection: What is one practical way you can step up to serve or share the gospel this week—whether in your church, your neighborhood, or your workplace?
As we gather to celebrate 60 years of God’s faithfulness at Highland Heights Baptist Church, it’s impossible not to be moved by the stories, the faces, and the memories that have shaped this congregation. From the earliest days, when a small group stepped out in faith to plant a church committed to proclaiming the gospel and standing on the Word of God, to the present, God’s hand has been evident in every season. The heart of this church has always been to reach the community, the state, and the world with the good news of Jesus Christ. That passion, rooted in the Great Commission, has never wavered, even as methods and faces have changed.
Looking back, we see countless “God moments”—times when the Lord provided property, brought the right leaders, or orchestrated divine appointments that changed lives. These stories remind us that God is always at work, often in ways we don’t expect, and that every person here is part of His ongoing story. Remembering what God has done is not just nostalgia; it’s fuel for faith, a reminder that the God who moved in the past is still moving today and will continue to do so in the future.
Yet, while we honor the past, we must not be held captive by it. The call is to remember, but also to forget—to let go of what is behind, whether victories or wounds, and to press on toward what God has ahead. The past can haunt, hold, or humble us, but it must not paralyze us. Instead, we are invited to learn, to forgive, and to move forward with a fresh vision. The best days are not behind us; the best is yet to come, because God’s promise is that His church will prevail.
The future of Highland Heights depends not on a single leader, but on every member being willing to step up, to serve, to be “ushers” who make room for the next generation to encounter Christ. The fields are ripe for harvest, and God is calling each of us to play our part. Whether you’ve been here for decades or are new to this family, you are here for a reason. Let’s remember, let’s release, and let’s run the race set before us, confident that God, who began a good work, will carry it on to completion.
Philippians 1:6 (ESV) — > And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 12:1 (ESV) — > Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Matthew 16:15-18 (ESV) — > He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
``My friend, God loved you so much that he found you and he saved you and he transformed you. Look back at what God has done. Don't just look back on the defense. Look back on the victories. Because when you remember, you're encouraged and you say, man, God, you did it once, you'll do it again. Remember. Remember what he has done in your life, because he will do it again. Too many of us are being held in bondage from the mistakes that we made in the past. And yet too many people are holding us in bondage for the mistakes we made in the the past. Amen. Quit letting people hold you in bondage. Look at the past and say, I'm going to learn from it, I'm going to grow from it, but I'm moving on. God's got more for you and your individual life and for this church. [01:57:57] (24 seconds) #BestIsYetToCome
When there's a preoccupation with the past and a paranoid about the future, there's going to be paralysis in the present. I said, man, that'll preach. I can take old Dr. Wheeler's writing that down. He's going to preach a sermon on that. You watch. I gave him the notes. Ken gave me the notes. But anyway, you listen. Preoccupation with the past. Oh, I wish we could go back. And I wish it could be like when pastor was here. And I wish it could. Oh, I don't know what the future holds. I'm so scared of what's going to happen in the future. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. You're going to find yourself in paralysis in the present. You're not going to be able to function. [02:00:16] (41 seconds) #FieldsRipeForHarvest
God has called this church, this body of believers. You're here for a reason, for a purpose. We have passed through these doors for a reason, for a purpose. And you can remember yesterday and rejoice, and you can be selective in your memory of what happened in the past. But let me tell you something. The best is yet to come. [02:02:45] (21 seconds) #BeTheUshers
The best is yet to come. And he's investing in you. And he's here because God has put that on his heart. And listen, nothing's perfect, but the best is yet to come. [02:03:43] (17 seconds) #SpirituallySignificant
No organization has been promised forever except the church. Nothing against, I hope Turning Point is here until Jesus comes. But I want to tell you something, my friend. God has said to you. The church that's here at Highland Heights, I want you to be here forever. I want you to be reaching this community forever. I want you to be reaching the state of Virginia forever. Forever. I want you to be reaching the United States forever. I want you to be reaching the world forever. The best is yet to come. [02:04:49] (32 seconds) #SurrenderAndServe
Listen, my friend, the fields are ripe unto harvest. People are open. People are listening. People want to know. They want to hear. God said, I'll build my church. Nothing's going to stop it. It's not going to fail and it's not going to falter. Even through difficult times, times. I'm telling you, it will last. [02:05:47] (22 seconds)
Now let me ask you something. You willing to be an usher? I mean, if this church is going to be here 60 years from now, I'll be part of those great cloud of witnesses that are looking down and encouraging you on and telling you, go on. But if it's going to be here, then you are going to have to step up and say, God, here I am. Send me. It's not going to happen because of Dr. Wheeler. It's not going to happen because of Pastor Mike or Brian or Tim or Jackson. It's going to happen because the people of God and you heard the testimony. Ron said it and Mike alluded to it. It was because you, the people said, we're going to go into all the world and share the gospel. [02:07:38] (49 seconds)
