“Nobody intends to be cynical. Like, nobody says, my life ambition is one day to grow up and be a cynic. Nobody says that, right? And people don't become cynical because they don't care. They become cynical because they do care. In fact, they probably care a lot and they give their whole heart to something and they go all in on something and it doesn't turn out the way that they thought it would and it becomes deeply disappointing and it breaks their heart and oftentimes in a moment like that we're all tempted rather than to become wiser we're tempted to become cynical and to lose hope and to stop trusting.”
“Cynicism is moving through our culture like a cancer and it produces hopelessness. Although we have unprecedented technology and we have books and screens in our face all the time filled with self-help content we're crippled by mental health and addiction and emptiness and anger and promiscuity and loneliness and violence. We live in a cynical culture and it's dangerous because it hurts your soul. Rather than just being upset or frustrated about all the things that are going on in the world ask yourself if you live in that sense of frustration all the time what does it do to your soul? Well I can tell you it's toxic. It will kill your faith it will wound your relationships and it will steal your joy.”
“So how do we prevent ourselves from drowning in a culture of cynicism? Romans chapter 12 verse 2 says this do not conform to the pattern of the world. So our culture and our world has a rhythm and a direction and a pattern and a current. And so one of the most important spiritual disciplines that you and I can learn as followers of Jesus in the 21st century is the spiritual discipline of resistance. That we learn to do not conform let me give you another way to say that resist. Resist the pattern resist the flow I often say it like this resist the machine resist the direction that culture is going the best defense is a good offense.”
“When we celebrate what God celebrates we build our lives around God's presence rather than the pressures of the world. And I got good news for you as a follower of Jesus if you are a follower of Jesus you've got a lot to celebrate. You have so many things to celebrate. You have the best news to celebrate but you and I all have to make the choice and we have to make it every day and we have to make it multiple times a day. Are we going to build our lives around the good news we have to celebrate or are we going to build our lives around whatever the pressure of the culture is saying in this moment?”
“Now just listen to me on this every book ever written by any human that will ever be written by any human is dead but there's one book that is alive and it is the word of God the word of God is living and it is not just living it's not just living and sitting on a shelf it's living and it's busy it's active it's at work it's in motion it's dynamic it's living and active and so every every word that any human has ever spoken any blog any content any YouTube video those authors of those words will die one day and their words will ultimately die with them but there's one word that will never die because it's a living word and it's an active word and it's a dynamic word and it's the word of God.”
“If your faith is struggling read the word if your faith is weak read the word I'm just having trouble trusting God read the word it'll build your faith.”
“The word of God will guide you and it'll give you direction and listen to this God's word's the best weapon against the lies of Satan and against his temptation now let me tell you why because Jesus himself when he was driven in the wilderness by the Holy Spirit and he came into direct contact and confrontation with Satan himself and Satan tried to tempt him what did Jesus do even Jesus defeated him with the word of God.”
“The sword of the spirit is the word of God and it is an offensive weapon and it can break the bondages in your life and it can cut off the lies of the enemy and it can destroy the schemes and the plans and the strategies that he has against you and your family and may have had for generations the sword of the spirit is powerful and it destroys the work of the enemy.”
“If you believe Jesus let's just put it there Jesus said your word is truth your word father sanctify them by the truth and your word is truth.”
“Let me tell you one of the things that's been going on there's just been this return and this openness and curiosity to God and to the church by younger generations and let me tell you I just got this report yesterday from the Barna Institute and let me tell you one of the latest things we've just heard weekly Bible reading is up 42% now listen since a 15 year low last year in 2024 weekly Bible reading was at a 15 year low and between then and now it's up 42%.”
“So my question to the boomers in the house and the Gen X are where you at because all I've heard for years is young people this and young people that and young people the other uh oh uh oh young people starting to figure it out where you at that's what I gotta know what are you doing don't back off now you're gonna miss out you need to celebrate anyway.”
“How do you celebrate God's word how do you honor God's word this goes way beyond just listening it goes way beyond reading there's more to it there's we have to engage with God's word.”
“Do not merely listen to the word I don't know how to make that clearer and so deceive yourselves if you there are people who know the Bible read the Bible and hear the Bible and are deceived did you know that and he gives you actually how to not let that happen to you do not merely listen to the word and deceive yourself do what it says.”
“Don't passively engage in God's word don't passively listen to God's word but actively engage read it think about it memorize it meditate it engage it this is why I often times encourage you when we come to church take notes do you just come and sit do you watch online and just sit and listen while you're doing something else and you never write down anything that you hear do you just passively like you're at a movie theater just take in the experience and by one o'clock when you're done eating you have no idea what happened that morning is that how you approach God's word no write it down if you can't remember it you can't do it.”
“Are you a good steward of God's voice in your life that's the question however it comes nobody's perfect at it nobody's you know but are you a good steward generally of God's voice in your life.”
“Can I tell you how much richer my life is because I did that can I tell you what Timothy said is true as I read through the scripture I was rebuked I was corrected I was encouraged I was strengthened I was inspired I was challenged it did all of that and it'll do that in your life too.”
“Whoever you listen to sets the direction for your life whoever we all listen to somebody all of us and whoever the voices are that you listen to set the direction for your life so be careful who you listen to this is where resistance comes in right remember what I said earlier this is where resistance comes in if you're celebrating God's word you have more power to resist the voices that are trying to penetrate into your life.”
“There are people who know how to say all the right things but if you watch their life they're not going the right way and Psalm 1 says do not listen to them it doesn't matter that they're speaking the truth their life is so loud you can't hear it.”
“The world is filled with faithless voices but God is a faithful voice listen to God but watch this do more than listen.”
“What does meditate mean it means that you think deeply about how you might apply the truth of scripture to your life that's what meditation means how can I live what does it look like in my marriage in my family and with my parenting and my children at my workplace and my schedule and the circumstances that I what does it look like for me to live out God's word in my context that's what meditate means meditate on it.”
“When you engage the Bible four times a week or more feeling lonely drops 30% anger issues drop 32% bitterness and relationship drops 40% alcoholism drops 57% sex outside of marriage almost 70% feeling spiritually stagnant drops 60% pornography drops 61% and look at these two things that skyrocket sharing faith jumps 200% because you got a fire shut up in your bones it's trying to get out discipling others 230%.”
“If your answer is I don't know or I don't really have a schedule or I don't have a translation I don't really have a regular time that I read the Bible then can I just say this to you as a pastor then probably what's happening is you're being more influenced by the voices of the world than you are by the voice of God.”
“If you're going to honor God's word and you're going to resist the lies and the cynicism and the anger and the anxiety and all the things that are attacking man you've got to learn to find however you do it to celebrate God's word in your life and to honor it and to lift it up.”
“You're not trying to learn the Bible tomorrow just take a sip and Tuesday and take a little sip and Wednesday take a little sip you don't have to read a million verses you don't have to read 18 chapters you don't have to understand everything you read just take a drink and the next day a little more and a little more and as the months go by and the years go by your roots are going to get deeper and deeper and deeper and your limbs are going to go further and further and further and the fruit that will come off of your life will be unbelievable but it won't happen because you got nuked one day with the word of God it will happen because you took a drink just take a little drink.”
