Faith has a heart for God’s future. Hebrews 11 puts Abraham and Sarah before the church as people who received a promise and acted on it before they ever saw it come to pass. Abraham walked through a land full of strangers, dug wells, built altars, and lived like God’s promise was true, even though he did not yet hold a title deed. Faithfulness is living as though the future were now.
God has promised a day when sin will not reign, death will not conquer, and evil will not have the last word. That future has not fully arrived, because sickness, injustice, sin, and death still hurt people every day. Christ’s victory, however, calls God’s people to live now as people who are not controlled by evil, bitterness, or the need to settle every score. God’s future must capture the heart, because the heart serves as mission control for thoughts, emotions, choices, love, and service.
The negativity of the world can capture a heart if it is allowed to. The news, the political noise, the bad statistics, and the fear that the church is fading can make people want to circle the wagons and hang on tight. God’s faithfulness tells a different story. History shows that when God’s people become complacent, God raises up people who seek His heart again. God is still raising up young people who love Him and want to serve Him in a meaningful way.
Abraham’s call required him to leave what was known and secure. The unknown can be fearful, but the unknown can also be faithful when God is the One directing the journey. Abraham also lived in tents because he looked for a city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Buildings, programs, comforts, and traditions can be good gifts, but they cannot become security. God alone is security, and His people must hold even good things loosely.
Abraham trusted God with an unseen future, investing his whole life in a covenant meant for generations yet to come. God’s people often trust Christ with heaven but struggle to trust Him with tomorrow. Eternity does not begin at death. Eternity is now, and God calls His people to trust Him with the future here and now. Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac showed a heart fully captured by God’s future, and God’s provision of a substitute points to Jesus Christ, who paid for sin so that death would not have the final word.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Faith lives toward God’s promises Faith does not wait until every detail is visible before obeying. Abraham acted on what God had said, not on what his eyes could prove. God’s promises give present direction even when fulfillment still lies ahead. [41:22]
- 2. The unknown can be faithful Fear treats an unknown future as proof that something has gone wrong. Faith treats the unknown as a place where God can still lead, provide, and raise up what is needed. God does not always give the map, but He remains faithful on the road. [51:24]
- 3. Hold earthly comforts loosely Tents remind God’s people that no building, program, tradition, or familiar way of doing things lasts forever. Good gifts become dangerous when they replace trust in God. The city with real foundations belongs to God, not to human effort. [55:11]
- 4. Trust God with tomorrow too Hope in heaven can become detached from daily trust if eternity is treated as beginning only after death. God’s future includes today, next year, and generations still to come. Faith places tomorrow in the same faithful hands that hold eternity. [1:00:30]
- 5. Let God’s future capture the heart Negativity can make a heart cling to control and shrink back from God’s calling. God’s future frees people to loosen their grip and stop living scared. Christ calls for hearts shaped by His promises rather than by the noise of the world. [1:05:34]
