Bible ReadingMatthew 15:21-28 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
[32:15] And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”
[33:20] But he did not answer her a word.
[33:28] And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”
[33:37] He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
[40:58] But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
[34:04] And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”
[41:44] She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”
[42:02] Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.”
[51:57] And her daughter was healed instantly.
[52:26]Exodus 25:17-22 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth.
[38:00] And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat.
[38:20] Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends.
[38:20] The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be.
[38:20] And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you.
[38:25] There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.”
[40:14]Matthew 27:51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
[38:46]Observation questions- In Matthew 15, what are the different things the woman does and says as she keeps coming to Jesus for help?
- What details in the passage make this encounter feel difficult or uncomfortable rather than simple and easy to explain? [34:08]
- According to Exodus 25, where is the mercy seat located, and what is it associated with in Israel’s worship? [38:20]
- What images are used to describe mercy moving beyond the temple and beyond familiar religious boundaries? [40:14]
Interpretation questions- Jesus says he was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, yet he ends by praising the woman’s faith and healing her daughter. What does that tension reveal about the reach of God’s mercy? [40:27]
- The woman does not argue that she deserves help; she asks for a crumb. What does her response show about humility, faith, and how a person approaches Jesus? [42:21]
- The torn temple curtain in Matthew 27 and the mercy seat in Exodus 25 are connected with this story. How does that connection help explain why this meeting in Tyre and Sidon matters? [38:59]
- If this passage shows the true humanity of Jesus as well as his compassion, how might that shape the way people read his silence, his hard words, and his final response? [43:04]
Application questions- The woman’s prayer becomes very simple: “Lord, help me.” When life is confusing or painful, is there an area where prayer needs to become that honest and that direct? [52:48]
- Great faith does not always sound impressive; sometimes it simply asks for a crumb. Where might pride, self-justifying, or the need to appear worthy be making it harder to receive mercy? [42:02]
- Mercy often reaches people outside the circles that feel familiar, safe, or deserving. Who in everyday life is easy to keep at a distance because they feel inconvenient, unfamiliar, or draining? [49:03]
- A mercy seat moment can happen when irritation gives way to tenderness. Can the group think of a recent situation where annoyance or resistance slowly turned into compassion? What changed in that moment? [48:25]
- The woman keeps praying through silence, rejection, and insult. What does persistence in prayer look like right now for someone carrying concern for a child, spouse, friend, or parent? [52:18]
- Hearts can have mental and spiritual deadbolts. What are some signs that a heart has become closed off, and what might help open it again to God’s wider mercy? [43:27]
- The connectedness of all people becomes clearer when barriers come down. Where might God be inviting deeper openness to someone from a different background, culture, temperament, or story? [51:22]
