#PersistentFaith
“``Maybe this is something the woman had heard from Jesus teaching. Maybe she knew. God does not always answer our prayers in the instant we ask, but Jesus tells us here persistence is a good thing. Well, if Jesus were testing this woman, she passes with flying colors. So desperate was she, so strong her faith, she would not take no for an answer and she believed that even a crumb from Jesus would heal her daughter. And she was right.”

#WrestleWithGod
“God speaks to us through his word. It is this living breathing thing. And so God invites us to wrestle with him, to ask questions, to cry out if we need to, and to humbly come to him like a little child and ask. At the beginning of this story, scripture tells us that Jesus withdrew to this region of Phoenicia, of Canaan, crossing over into a new territory beyond Galilee into Gentile territory. And God kind of invites us to cross over too. Last week he called the disciples to cross over the Sea Of Galilee even though he knew a storm was coming. In our story today, Jesus crosses over ethnic and religious boundaries to a new group of people who are begging for his help.”

#FaithUnderTest
“Well, if Jesus were testing this woman, she passes with flying colors. So desperate was she, so strong her faith, she would not take no for an answer and she believed that even a crumb from Jesus would heal her daughter. And she was right. This brings us to Door Number 3. Is Jesus testing us? Is Jesus testing the disciples? And of course, today that means us because we're his disciples now. Is he being is he being ironic just to see what the disciples will do? Is he working to prepare them for what's next when he's not around?”

#LeaveAssumptionsBehind
“And God calls us to cross over from our preconceived notions or assumptions or previous beliefs that might prevent us from following Jesus the way he would have us follow him. Our work as disciples of Jesus might look different, might make us uncomfortable, we might not know what to do, but God invites us into the wrestle. Whichever take on the story you have today, you decide.”

#UnexpectedFaith
“doesn't Jesus tend to turn our expectations upside down? Well, brings us to Door Number 2. Is Jesus testing the woman? Does Jesus know all along that he's gonna help her? He just wants to see her faith? I mean, we're talking about the king of the universe. He already knows what's on her heart. He can already see her faith. Maybe he wants the disciples to see her faith? The woman uses a formal address when she is speaking to him. She says, she calls him, son of David, have mercy on me. She is admitting that she believes he is the messiah. That wording from a Canaanite,”

#CanaaniteConfession
“Although Jesus says to this woman exactly what the disciples expected him to say, doesn't Jesus tend to turn our expectations upside down? Well, brings us to Door Number 2. Is Jesus testing the woman? Does Jesus know all along that he's gonna help her? He just wants to see her faith? I mean, we're talking about the king of the universe. He already knows what's on her heart. He can already see her faith. Maybe he wants the disciples to see her faith? The woman uses a formal address when she is speaking to him. She says, she calls him, son of David, have mercy on me. She is admitting that she believes he is the messiah. That wording from a Canaanite, there are many of the lost sheep of Israel that weren't weren't even ready to say that.”

#HumbleWorship
“Denying a child help, does this sound like the character of God revealed in the person of Jesus Christ that we know? It doesn't, does it? Well, he does end up helping the woman. If at first his intentions seemed otherwise, did she talk him into it? Does Jesus change his mind? Does God change his mind? There are some scriptural passages that that seem to say so. The word used in here, it wasn't just it says, the translation says she knelt at his feet. But really that word that's used is more like she threw herself at her feet. She worshiped him. It's the same word used when the wise men came to visit the baby Jesus, to pay homage.”
