Bible Reading
Judges 6:11-16 “Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” And Gideon said to him, “Please, sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
[55:20]Judges 7:2-7 “The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.”
[01:00:02]Hebrews 11:32-34 “And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.”
[01:14:30]Observation questions
- In Judges 6:11–16, what concerns and objections does Gideon raise when he is called to lead Israel?
- What does Gideon’s nighttime destruction of Baal’s altar show about the mixture of fear and obedience in his character? [57:07]
- In Judges 7:2–7, what reason does God give for reducing Gideon’s army from thousands of men to only three hundred? [01:00:15]
- What later actions of Gideon show the change from tearing down an idol to becoming connected to Israel’s idolatry? [01:11:52]
Interpretation questions
- Why is God’s promise to be with Gideon more important than Gideon’s family background, insecurity, or natural ability?
- What does the reduced army reveal about the danger of taking credit for a victory that God has provided? [01:00:34]
- Gideon obeys while afraid, but later his insecurity seems to grow into pride, vengeance, and self-importance. How can insecurity become self-focused rather than truly humble? [01:06:42]
- Hebrews 11 includes Gideon among people whose weakness was turned to strength. How can God honor Gideon’s faith without approving of the sinful choices Gideon made later? [01:15:11]
Application questions
- Where is fear currently making obedience to God feel difficult—sharing faith, having an honest conversation, turning away from sin, serving someone, or standing by a conviction? What would one small act of obedience look like this week? [01:04:02]
- Gideon needed reassurance, yet he was still called to act on what God had already made clear. Is there an area where more certainty is being used as a reason to delay obedience?
- When something goes well, what is the usual temptation: to credit personal effort, ability, planning, or influence rather than God? What could help give God credit more intentionally? [01:00:34]
- Insecurity can keep attention fixed on personal weakness, image, and fears. What patterns of self-focus show up most often, and how could looking to God change the response? [01:06:44]
- Gideon’s success became connected to gold, recognition, and an ephod that became a snare. Are there good things—success, money, influence, ministry, relationships, or reputation—that could quietly become idols? What warning signs would reveal that? [01:11:57]
- God uses flawed people, but flaws are not excuses to stop growing. What weakness or repeated failure needs both honest repentance and renewed faith that God can still use a person? [01:16:03]
