Camping With God

Genesis 15 opens with Abram sitting inside the limitations of his circumstances while God is speaking a future far bigger than anything Abram can presently see. Abram has heard promises about nations, generations, and blessing all the families of the earth, yet his faith has shrunk down to one painful question: “What will you give me, seeing I go childless?” Disappointment has not made Abram stop believing in God. It has made him believe God for less.

God answers Abram’s limited view with mercy. God does not shame him for struggling, but camps with him before calling him out of the tent. God brings Abram outside, removes the ceiling from his vision, and tells him to look up at the stars. The tent represents circumstances, limited perspective, and the small world created when disappointment gets the final word. The sky represents the promise, the faithfulness of God, and the reality that there is still more than what can presently be seen.

The promise requires Abram to see it before he sees it. Faith is not pretending the problem is not real. Faith is deciding that God is more real than the problem. God’s hand has not been shortened, His promise has not weakened, and His power has not diminished. Shrinking circumstances must never be allowed to produce a shrinking God in the mind.

Genesis 17 shows God calling Abram by the name Abraham before Isaac is born. God speaks to who Abraham is becoming before his circumstances look anything like it. Identity is not something a person invents; identity is received from the Creator. Belonging to God comes before doing for God, because purpose flows from belonging. Titles, relationships, careers, approval, and success can all change, but God never does.

Abraham’s story also warns against producing Ishmaels by taking matters into human hands. God-sized vision calls for radical obedience, patient trust, and a willingness to follow Jesus before everything feels clear. God encounters produce vision, vision produces faith, faith produces obedience, and obedience opens the way into purpose. The tent is not the whole sky. God still meets people in their limited places, but His grace always calls them to look up, believe again, and step into what only He can accomplish.
