Spiritual warfare cannot stay in the fact or fake category. Jesus and the New Testament authors treat Satan as real, evil, and active, though never equal to God. The devil is not a red guy with horns from The Simpsons. Satan is the accuser, the father of lies, the one who blinds people and holds humanity under slavery to sin.
John says the Son of God appeared “to destroy the devil’s work.” The cross, then, is not only about forgiveness in some abstract way. Christ goes into death, breaks its power, and rescues people from the authority of darkness into the life of God. The called out ones are not called to remain slaves to sin. Christ calls them into spiritual freedom as children of God.
The image of golfers playing in a minefield names the problem. Anxiety, addiction, racing thoughts, broken marriages, and deep patterns of sin can involve physical and psychological realities, and those realities should not be ignored. But spiritual beings cannot keep ignoring the spiritual realm when physical and psychological help alone has not brought freedom. The battle is not against flesh and blood, even when flesh and blood is part of the pain.
Paul calls God’s people to put on the full armor of God and stand against the devil’s schemes. The helmet of salvation protects the mind with the truth that a believer is not defined by old sin, shame, or accusation. The armor only becomes useful when God’s people actually pray it, think about it, and use it when lies and temptation come.
The devil’s schemes often look like attrition, surprise attacks, deception, division, isolation, sabotage, loss, and attacks on leadership. Satan does not need one specific method. Satan simply wants eyes off the King and the kingdom. A spirit of offense can turn spouses into enemies. A lie planted in childhood can keep repeating itself for decades. Isolation from the body of Christ can slowly cut off the supplies needed for life.
The response is simple, though not shallow: resist, rebuke, and renounce. The child of God resists temptation, rebukes thoughts that do not belong to the new life in Christ, and renounces old patterns of rebellion and shame. Like Typhoid Mary, a person can deny an invisible reality while its effects keep spreading. The truth of Christ’s work opens another way: run to the Father, stand in God’s truth, and battle for the soul.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The cross destroys the devil’s work. Christ’s death and resurrection do more than offer relief from guilt. Christ breaks the claim of sin and death over those who belong to Him. The identity of a child of God rests in Christ’s victory, not in the old life that once held authority. [49:20]
- 2. The battle is not flesh and blood. Marriage conflict, offense, temptation, and anxiety can become places where spiritual warfare is at work. This does not erase real responsibility or practical action, but it changes who the real enemy is. The person across the room is never the ultimate target. [59:10]
- 3. Lies lose power before God’s truth. Satan’s native language is lying, especially through accusations that become internal voices. Shame often keeps repeating what God never says about His children. The truth that a believer is God’s child confronts the old names and identities that once seemed permanent. [67:40]
- 4. Isolation slowly starves the soul. Siege often looks ordinary at first: fatigue, distraction, missed gatherings, and a gradual withdrawal from Christian community. The enemy benefits when encouragement, correction, worship, and prayer are cut off. The body of Christ is not an optional add-on for a soul under pressure. [71:04]
- 5. Resist, rebuke, and renounce old patterns. Resistance refuses temptation in the authority of Christ. Rebuke rejects thoughts and accusations that contradict God’s Word. Renouncing brings old ways of control, rebellion, and shame into the light and chooses the renewed mind Christ gives.
