Called to Gather and Be Sent: Our Apostolic Mission
Summary
In this gathering, we celebrate the journey of Annette and Keith, who have been called by God to join us at Pneuma Church in Ashford. Their story is a testament to the mysterious and wonderful ways God works in our lives, guiding us to places and roles we might not have anticipated. Annette's journey from uncertainty to accepting a pastoral role is a reminder that God often calls us to step into the unknown, trusting in His plan and timing. This calling aligns with the mandate God has given us as a church: to take what He is doing among us to the nations, both locally and globally.
The essence of our gathering today is twofold: to gather and to be sent. Gathering is a biblical principle deeply rooted in both the Old and New Testaments. It is a time for collective worship, encouragement, and equipping. We gather not just for ourselves but to build each other up, to share in the joy of God's presence, and to prepare for the mission He has set before us. The act of gathering is a powerful expression of our unity and devotion to God, reinforcing our covenant with Him and with each other.
However, gathering is not the end goal. We gather to be sent out into the world, carrying the message of the Gospel and the love of Christ to every corner of our lives. Being apostolic means recognizing that each of us is sent by God with His authority to bring His kingdom wherever we are. Whether it's at the school gate, the workplace, or even on holiday, we are called to live out the Great Commission, making disciples and bringing God's rule and reign into every situation.
As we prepare for the upcoming mission trip and the arrival of Nicola, who embodies this apostolic calling, we are reminded that every one of us has a role to play in God's plan. We are an apostolic people, sent to bring hope, healing, and the love of Jesus to a world in need. Let us embrace this calling with courage and joy, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.

Devotional
Day 1: Trusting in God's Unseen Path
God often guides us in unexpected ways, leading us to places and roles we might not have anticipated. Annette and Keith's journey to Ashford is a testament to this mysterious guidance. Annette's transition from uncertainty to accepting a pastoral role serves as a powerful reminder that God calls us to step into the unknown, trusting in His plan and timing. This journey encourages us to remain open to God's calling, even when the path is unclear, and to embrace the opportunities He presents to us. [01:01:24]
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel uncertain about the future? How can you trust God to guide you through this uncertainty today?
Day 2: The Power of Gathering
Gathering as a church is a deeply rooted biblical principle that strengthens our faith and unity. It is a time for collective worship, encouragement, and equipping, not just for personal edification but for the benefit of the entire community. Gathering allows us to share in the joy of God's presence and prepare for the mission He has set before us. It is a powerful expression of our unity and devotion to God, reinforcing our covenant with Him and with each other. [01:20:45]
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV)
Reflection: How can you contribute to the sense of community and encouragement in your church gatherings this week?
Day 3: Sent with Divine Authority
As followers of Christ, we are all sent with God's authority to bring His kingdom to the world. This apostolic calling challenges us to live out the Great Commission in our daily lives, making disciples and sharing the love of Jesus wherever we go. Whether at the school gate, the workplace, or even on holiday, we are called to live out this mission, recognizing that each of us is sent by God with His authority. [01:31:54]
"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.'" (John 20:21, ESV)
Reflection: In what specific area of your life can you actively live out your apostolic calling today, bringing the love of Christ to those around you?
Day 4: Living the Great Commission Daily
The Great Commission is not limited to overseas missions; it is a call to bring God's love and truth into every aspect of our lives. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ, living out His teachings and sharing His love with others, whether at work, home, or in our communities. This calling challenges us to integrate our faith into our daily interactions and to be intentional about making disciples in our everyday environments. [01:34:55]
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one person in your life who does not know Christ. How can you intentionally share the love and truth of Jesus with them this week?
Day 5: Embracing Our Apostolic Identity
We are an apostolic people, called to gather and be sent. This identity compels us to engage with the world around us, bringing hope, healing, and the message of Jesus to those in need. Our mission is to live out our faith boldly and authentically, trusting that God will work through us to transform lives. Embracing this identity means recognizing our role in God's plan and stepping out in courage and joy to fulfill it. [01:36:46]
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." (1 Peter 2:9, ESV)
Reflection: What steps can you take today to more fully embrace your identity as an apostolic person, actively participating in God's mission in the world?
Quotes
"let me just tell you a bit of what has gone on we first met Annette and Keith last spring when they came to visit Ashford knowing their time in Plymouth was drawing to a close over a period of a few weeks it became apparent to them that God was calling them to come and be in Ashford and also to be a part of Pneuma Church they landed here with two vans and a car on the 8th of August last year a little battered from their last season but ready to see Isaac go up to secondary school in September initially they stayed with Keith's parents from the moment they arrived they were proactive in getting to know people praying for people listening to what people have to say and all the time looking for what God is doing what was God calling them to I remember going out at various times speaking to both of them and saying why are you here and they said we don't know but we could all see that God was involved in October after what felt like a God nudge we asked Annette about her experience with overseas mission she told us of a trip when she was much younger and then the conversation moved on after more of a God nudge Annette and I went for a coffee and I told her of a role and a job that didn't exist essentially God has been speaking to us as Pneuma Church about a mandate that he has written on the inside of us about taking what God is doing among us at Pneuma Church to the people of other nations both in their nation and in this it's easy to think this should be something that the large and very established churches should be doing but God has been revealing to us this is something he's already doing and therefore it's up to us to cooperate with that it's not our church it's his well in truth Annette didn't seem interested as far as I could tell but it was a nice coffee three and a half weeks later she messaged to say could we meet back up and I thought bless her heart she doesn't want to say no to me by text how honoring how kind that was so let's just have another coffee she's good company I'm like this will be fine and then she said I'm saying yes to what to the job that you haven't got oh that oh my word are you" [00:44:16]
"since that time we have spent many hours seeking God over what it is that he's wanting from us and Annette and going through of course the due HR process which meant that Annette started being employed two days a week as a pastor here at the beginning of last month normally we would look to bring someone on as a pastor whom we've known a long time this isn't the case with Annette but God spoke so clearly to us and said that he had made his appointment and brought Annette to help fulfill this mandate he has given us as Numa Church in this last month Annette has spent time with people who already have a specific heart and passion for working with people internationally and beginning to build a framework of support for those people in this coming year we'll see Annette galvanize a team of people bring a Numa to the nation's perspective into the key spaces for looking how she can shift that culture and press into all that God has for us here as we supernaturally take Numa to the nations so what I'd love us to do is can we just stand first of all is that all right and I would just love to honor and welcome up Annette you you you" [47:12]
"apostolic means someone sent by God with his authority to bring his kingdom so I ask again are you apostolic okay we've now got more than 12 that's good I mean we haven't got the whole room but we got more than 12 if I if I remember I'll ask you again at the end you can put your hand down now Michael thank you [01:16:35]
so this morning in the time we've got we're going to focus on two things that the church is called to do there are loads more there are loads there are loads and loads but there are two things and they go together and the first is gather so if you've got Bibles which I hope you now have turn to Exodus 23 head for the beginning if you reach Genesis you've gone too far [01:16:59]
for Exodus 23 for those who've been reading the Bible in a year which is 60 no 70 of us then we've been there done that so it should should be familiar Exodus 23 we normally wait until everyone's found their place but this morning because of time I'm just going to keep pressing ahead so this three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me says God celebrate the festival unleavened bread for seven days eat bread made without yeast as I commanded you do this at the appointed time da da da in this particular month no one is to appear before me empty -handed next celebrate the festival of harvest with the first fruits of the crops you sow in your field next celebrate the festival of ingathering at the end of the year when you gather in your crops from the field three times a year all the men are to appear before the sovereign Lord sorry ladies do not offer thank God for Jesus do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast da da da so on bring the best of the first fruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God oh and by the way don't cook a young goat in its mother's milk useful tip there Deuteronomy while you're there just go on about three books from there head for Deuteronomy and it's chapter 31 Deuteronomy 31 [01:17:22]
you've made it. Verse 12, assemble the people, men, women, and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns, so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God. So fear, when we know, we know that when it talks about fearing God, it doesn't mean trembling, quaking in fear, I'm terrified, but it does mean, whoa, it means that, which will translate really badly on podcasts, but that's okay, everyone will work it out. And lastly, 1 Kings 8, go on a little bit, if you reach Psalms, you've gone too far. [01:19:15]
1 Kings 8, I hear the rustling of paper. 1 Kings 8. Chapter 8, oh, I forgot the verses, sorry. Oh yes, no, this is a longer bit, but that's okay, I'll start reading. So verse 1, you'll catch up. Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families to bring up the ark of the Lord's covenant from Zion, the city of David. All the Israelites came together to King Solomon at the time of the festival in the particular month. When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark and they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of the meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests and the Levites carried them up, King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark. They were doing lots of sacrificing, et cetera. No vegetarians in the Old Testament. [01:20:02]
Verse 6, the priests then brought the ark of the Lord's covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the most holy place, put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and so on and so forth. Basically, everything that had been in the tent structure, the tabernacle was now being brought into the temple. They brought everything in. When the priests, verse 10, withdrew from the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud for the glory of the Lord filled his temple. Then Solomon said, the Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud. I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place, God, for you to dwell forever. And God said, you've got no idea, but thank you for now. No, he didn't. I just added that bit. Anyway, verse 16, while the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and he blessed them. [01:20:43]
I had a wonderful AI summary of this for me. It was very kind. And it was so good. I thought, I'm not even going to claim it as my own. I'm just going to read it out. It says this, in the Old Testament, gathering together was incredibly important as it represented a way for the Israelites to express their devotion to God through collective worship, offering sacrifices and hearing his word at designated places like the tabernacle and later the temple, signifying, they need some full stops in this AI, signifying their unity as God's chosen people and reinforcing their covenant with him through shared rituals and festivals. Essentially, nice. It was a way to actively demonstrate their faith and relationship with God as a community. [01:21:57]
And I'm going to start at verse 24. It says this. So Hebrews 10, 24. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. And all the more as you see the day approaching. That basically means he's coming back. He's coming back. And so he says, he says, meet together and encourage. So one of my jobs when we meet together, not mine, I don't mean job like work job. I mean, one of our roles as family is to put courage in one another. [01:22:46]
You've come here for the people sat around you, to put courage in them, especially when you see the day approaching. Come on, you've got this. He's coming back. Come on, you can do this. This is what God is calling you to. Give up that stuff. You don't need that stuff in your life. It's just going to hold you back. So on. That was for someone. 1 Corinthians 14. [01:24:24]
1 Corinthians 14, if you're coming together, we'll come together. Each of us will come together, each of those, and you has a hymn or a word of instruction a revelation a tongue or an interpretation everything must be done so the church can be built up da da da and he goes on to talk about order in worship but it's so easy to miss what then shall we say brothers and sisters when we come together when you come together if you prefer then this is what it needs to look like and then finally Acts 2 just go back a bit if you reach Matthew Mark Luke or John you've gone slightly too far you're looking for Hebrews [01:24:32]
just go back a bit. Corinthians is the first of the eons. 1 Corinthians 14, if you're coming together, we'll come together. Each of us will come together, each of those, and you has a hymn or a word of instruction a revelation a tongue or an interpretation everything must be done so the church can be built up da da da and he goes on to talk about order in worship but it's so easy to miss what then shall we say brothers and sisters when we come together when you come together if you prefer then this is what it needs to look like and then finally Acts 2 just go back a bit if you reach Matthew Mark Luke or John you've gone slightly too far you're looking for Hebrews. [01:24:56]
just go back a bit. Corinthians is the first of the eons. 1 Corinthians 14, if you're coming together, we'll come together. Each of us will come together, each of those, and you has a hymn or a word of instruction a revelation a tongue or an interpretation everything must be done so the church can be built up da da da and he goes on to talk about order in worship but it's so easy to miss what then shall we say brothers and sisters when you come together when you come together if you prefer then this is what it needs to look like and then finally Acts 2 [01:24:28]
just go back a bit if you reach Matthew Mark Luke or John you've gone slightly too far Acts 2 Acts chapter 2 verse 42 I know I always say to people that it's there's never any shame in looking in the content apologies we just we you probably haven't had time to look in the contents today but anyway Acts 2 42 says this they the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship to the breaking of bread and to prayer everyone was filled with awe of the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles all the believers were together and had everything in common they sold property and possessions we've done this recently on a Sunday to give to anyone who had need every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts they broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved [01:25:19]
thank you God for what you're doing. Great. In that case, please don't leave these three like this. Can you come and gather around them? And thank you, God. Please, to you all, please do remember to go upstairs and get your kids. We're going to pray for these guys. If you've got children upstairs, please go and get them. Stick around for feast. What do we need to do, Chris? I'm looking at Chris. Oh, Nick's doing it. Oh, sorry. [01:49:06]
thank you God', 'start': '3684.36', 'speaker': 'SPEAKER_01'}, {'end': '4539.82', 'text': "we're going to we're going to need some Bibles we haven't got long this morning because we've been doing other brilliant stuff if you haven't got a Bible pop your hand up we're gonna get one out to you now but you definitely will need one we're gonna fly through a number of a number of bits of the Bible today and by some miracle of God we will be done by eleven come on so what just put your hand up if you haven't got a Bible someone will bring one round to you and as we always say if you don't own one you can keep this one comes with our love best book you'll ever read so I've got a question for you first of all you don't actually need to answer it not well at least not like verbally but you can but intimate it's a hands -up type answer so the question is this are you apostolic that's all I want to know if you think you are put your hand up if you if you if you don't think you are or you don't know keep your hand down you know what you don't type thing okay so that's just keep them up as about 10 12 people okay cool so apostolic meaning someone sent by God with God's authority to bring his kingdom [01:15:02]

Verse 12, assemble the people, men, women, and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns, so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God. Anyway, verse 16, while the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and he blessed them. And so you can look up now. That's all fine. That's done. Just three. I could have picked so many of where the Israelites, talking Old Testament, gathered together. I had a wonderful AI summary of this for me. It was very kind. And it was so good. I thought, I'm not even going to claim it as my own. I'm just going to read it out. Essentially, nice. It was a way to actively demonstrate their faith and relationship with God as a community. That is why they gathered. New Testament is similar. Head to the back of the book. If you reach revelation, you've gone too far, you're looking for Hebrews. A few books back from the end. And it's chapter 10. And I'm going to start at verse 24. It says this. So Hebrews 10, 24. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. You've come here for the people sat around you, to put courage in them, especially when you see the day approaching. Come on, you've got this. He's coming back. Come on, you can do this. Corinthians is the first of the eons. 1 Corinthians 14, if you're coming together, we'll come together. so Deuteronomy 31 verse 12 here we are lady ladies you've made it. And all the more as you see the day approaching. That basically means he's coming back. He's coming back. And so he says, he says, meet together and encourage.
