Bible Reading
Ephesians 4:20-25 “But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”
[01:37]Genesis 2:18 “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
[07:17]John 4:1-26 “Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
[10:21]Observation questions
- In Ephesians 4:20–25, what actions does Paul connect with learning Christ: putting off, being renewed, putting on, and speaking truth?
- What reason does Paul give for speaking truth with one another, and what does that reveal about how believers are connected?
- In Genesis 2:18, what was “not good” even though Adam had God’s presence, provision, purpose, and paradise? [07:32]
- In John 4:1–26, what details show that the woman came to the well trying to avoid people, and how did Jesus respond to her? [10:21]
Interpretation questions
- Paul connects putting away falsehood with being members of one body. Why does deception do more than harm one person—how does it damage the whole community? [24:43]
- What is the difference between trying to manage sinful behavior and allowing God to deal with the heart beneath that behavior? Why does that difference matter for lasting change? [20:30]
- Jesus knew the woman at the well fully, yet He did not reject her. What does this show about the kind of honesty Christ invites from people who carry shame or a painful history? [11:04]
- Renewal is ongoing and comes from God rather than personal effort alone. What part do believers have in pursuing God’s presence, and what part belongs to God? [17:46]
Application questions
- What “representative” are you most tempted to send into prayer, church, or relationships—the polished version, the strong version, the successful version, or another version? What might it look like to show up honestly before God this week? [46:06]
- When you are tempted to hide, stretch the truth, perform, or avoid a hard conversation, what is usually underneath it: fear, shame, approval-seeking, self-deception, self-interest, or protection? [43:15]
- Is there a behavior in your life that may be acting like a check-engine light, pointing to a deeper heart issue? What would it look like to invite Christ to examine the source rather than merely cover the symptom? [21:38]
- Where has shame made you lower your face, withdraw from people, or assume that you do not belong? How does Christ’s mercy make it possible to take one faithful step out of hiding? [35:00]
- Are there places where honesty has felt unsafe because of past judgment, rejection, or hurt? What would wise, gradual honesty with God and a trustworthy believer look like—not sharing everything with everyone, but refusing to remain alone? [42:27]
- Think of one relationship where truthfulness could strengthen trust this week. Is there a confession, clarification, apology, or honest conversation that needs to happen? What might make that step difficult, and how can the group support you? [27:58]
- What daily practice could help you pursue renewal instead of relying on willpower alone—honest prayer, Scripture, confession, reaching out for support, or another practice? [18:08]
