God never said his highest priority is a person’s happiness. Happiness is a gift, and it is something to enjoy and give thanks for, but happiness is almost always tied to circumstances. Circumstances change. Biblical joy goes deeper because it is rooted not in what is happening around a person, but in who God is and what he is doing within a person.
The story behind “Burn the Ships” gives the picture. Courtney Smallbone had to flush the pills and say, “I’m done. I’m not going back.” The old story of sailors burning their ships makes the same point. Sometimes moving into a new life requires surrendering the old one, because the familiar ship can keep pulling a person back to habits, bitterness, comfort, fear, or false promises.
Jesus makes the difference between happiness and joy clear in John 15. Jesus connects joy to remaining in his love and walking in obedience, not to ease, success, or comfort. Joy in Scripture is relational before it is emotional. It grows out of intimacy with God, not favorable conditions. That is why James can speak of joy in trials, not because trials feel good, but because God uses them to mature faith.
God’s goal is transformation, and transformation leads to a deeper joy. God is not mainly shaping circumstances. God is shaping people into the likeness of Christ. Holiness does not mean moral superiority or pretending to be perfect. Holiness means being set apart, pruned, formed, and renewed, even when the process is uncomfortable.
The difference is simple but searching. Happiness asks, “Is this making me feel good right now?” Joy asks, “Is God forming something lasting in me?” Happiness seeks relief. Holiness seeks renewal. Happiness asks God to change the situation, but holiness asks God to change the person within it.
Jesus speaks of “my joy” just before the cross, which means his joy is strong enough to exist in the presence of suffering. Joy is not pretending the storm is not happening. Joy is knowing who is with a person in the storm. Grief and joy are not opposites. A person can cry, worship, feel disappointed, and still trust that God is good.
Faith refuses to judge the goodness of the author by one difficult chapter. God sees the whole story when a person only sees one painful page. The invitation is to stop asking only, “Does this make me happy?” and start asking, “Is God forming something lasting in me?” The deepest joy God gives is often found on the other side of surrender.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Joy is relational before emotional Joy does not begin with better circumstances. Joy grows from remaining in the love of Christ and trusting the Father in obedience. That means joy can be present even when feelings are heavy, because its root is not the weather of life but the nearness of God. [48:12]
- 2. Holiness seeks renewal, not relief Happiness usually asks for the pressure to stop. Holiness asks what God is forming inside the pressure. The deeper work of God may not immediately change the season, but it changes the heart that must live faithfully inside that season. [52:08]
- 3. One painful page is not all A difficult chapter can tempt a person to make a final conclusion about God. Faith refuses to judge the goodness of the author by one painful page. Christian hope rests in the truth that God sees the whole story and is not finished yet. [60:34]
- 4. Burn the ships that bind The old life can stay close enough to become an escape route. Surrender sometimes means removing the way back to what once enslaved, comforted falsely, or kept a person stuck. Joy moves forward because Jesus is with the person, not because the path already feels safe.
