Bible Reading1 John 5:16–21Verse 16: “If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this.”
[42:44]Verse 17: “All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.”
[43:00]Verse 18: “We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.”
[43:07]Verse 19: “We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”
[43:18]Verse 20: “And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.”
[43:23]Verse 21: “Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”
[43:39]Exodus 32:1–28Verses 1–6: “Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, ‘Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ Aaron said to them, ‘Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.’ Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.’ Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, ‘Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.’ So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.”
[01:07:26]Verses 7–10: “Then the LORD spoke to Moses, ‘Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and have sacrificed to it and said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!”’ The LORD said to Moses, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people. Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.’”
[01:12:12]Verses 26–28: “Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, ‘Whoever is for the LORD, come to me!’ And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him. He said to them, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, “Every man of you put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.”’ So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.”
[01:14:09]Numbers 16:1–35Verses 1–3: “Now Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took action, and they rose up before Moses, together with some of the sons of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, chosen in the assembly, men of renown. They assembled together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, ‘You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?’”
[01:16:26]Verses 4–7: “When Moses heard this, he fell on his face; and he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, ‘Tomorrow morning the LORD will show who is His, and who is holy, and will bring him near to Himself; even the one whom He will choose, He will bring near to Himself.’”
[01:17:00]Verses 23–27: “Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the congregation, saying, “Get back from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.”’ Then Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, with the elders of Israel following him, and he spoke to the congregation, saying, ‘Depart now from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, or you will be swept away in all their sin.’ So they got back from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the doorway of their tents, along with their wives and their sons and their little ones.”
[01:18:04]Verses 28–35: “Moses said, ‘By this you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these deeds; for this is not my doing. If these men die the death of all men or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me. But if the LORD brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into Sheol, then you will understand that these men have spurned the LORD.’ As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open; and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah with their possessions. So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. All Israel who were around them fled at their outcry, for they said, ‘The earth may swallow us up!’ Fire also came forth from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.”
[01:18:39]Observation questions- In 1 John 5:16–18, what words show that John expects believers to take a brother or sister’s sin seriously while also recognizing that believers can still commit sin? [47:25]
- What does John tell believers to do when they see a brother or sister committing sin not leading to death, and what does he say God will do?
- What four parts make up prayer for someone caught in ongoing sin: what should be opened, closed, turned from, and brought to an end? [53:27]
- In Exodus 32 and Numbers 16, what forms of rebellion took place, and what do those actions reveal about the people’s attitude toward God’s authority? [01:17:36]
Interpretation questions- John says that no one born of God “sins,” yet he has just spoken about a brother committing sin. How does the difference between committing a sin and living in an ongoing practice of sin help explain John’s words? [48:47]
- Why is prayer the first response when a believer is known to be caught in sin, rather than gossip, online hints, or simply waiting to see what happens? [50:53]
- Eternal life is a grace gift based on Christ’s finished work. Why does that truth give assurance to a believer while still leaving no room to treat sin casually? [01:02:25]
- Korah’s rebellion looked like a challenge to Moses and Aaron, but why was it ultimately a rejection of the Lord Himself and His authority? [01:18:00]
Application questions- Is there an area where sin has become too familiar, excused, hidden, joked about, or treated as a small thing? What would turning from that pattern look like in a real and specific way this week? [57:05]
- When news of another believer’s sin reaches you, what is your usual first response? How could you grow in being someone who cares enough to pray before speaking to anyone else? [50:53]
- Is there someone for whom you need to pray with “open and closed” prayers—that their heart would open to conviction and that an ungodly influence would be closed off? Without sharing unnecessary details, how can the group pray wisely for that person? [53:36]
- Repentance is not merely feeling sorry, being embarrassed, or wishing consequences would go away; it means turning and walking in a new direction. What practical step could help show that a particular sinful chapter is closing? [54:38]
- Israel had seen God’s power and faithfulness, yet they turned toward an idol connected to their former slavery. What kinds of old patterns, comforts, or influences can become idols that pull people back toward what Christ has rescued them from? [01:11:12]
- God’s authority is not something to be trifled with, but holy fear does not mean running away from His presence. What would it look like to hold both reverence for God’s holiness and confidence in His grace in daily life? [01:21:44]
- Christ’s grace secures eternal life, and that same grace calls God’s children forward in holiness. Where do you most need to stop relying on your own spiritual scorekeeping and rest in Christ’s finished work while obeying Him more fully? [01:02:25]
