Building a Life with God: Faith and Science United

Summary

Building a life with God requires a strong foundation, and understanding the existence and nature of God is the first step. The idea that science and faith are at odds is a misconception. Many intellectuals, including scientists, have found evidence of God in the intricacies of the universe. For instance, the precision of the universe's conditions suggests intentional creation, as noted by astrophysicists like Dr. O'Keefe. Similarly, the complexity of biochemistry and DNA points to intelligent design, indicating that belief in God is not only rational but also supported by scientific discoveries.

The concept of God is further explored through general and specific revelations. General revelation is evident in creation, where the natural world reflects God's handiwork. This has inspired many scientists throughout history to study the universe with a sense of wonder and purpose. Specific revelation, on the other hand, is found in Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible, a collection of 66 books written by diverse authors over 1,500 years, offers insights into God's nature and His relationship with humanity. It is considered divinely inspired, with prophets speaking through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ represents the ultimate revelation of God, providing a historical and tangible manifestation of divine love and truth. His life, teachings, and resurrection are well-documented and supported by historical evidence, making the claim of His non-existence unfounded. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit continues to guide believers, offering personal revelation and insight into God's will.

Understanding our identity as spiritual beings is crucial. We are created in God's image, possessing inherent dignity and worth. Our spiritual nature means that true transformation begins at the heart level, affecting our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This understanding challenges us to focus on spiritual growth rather than merely physical or external changes.

The Bible plays a vital role in this journey, serving as a source of nourishment for our souls. It provides clarity, guidance, and strength in spiritual battles. By studying and meditating on Scripture, we align ourselves with God's truth and allow His Word to transform us from the inside out.

Devotional

Day 1: Science and Faith in Harmony
The belief that science and faith are incompatible is a misconception. The precision and complexity of the universe and life itself point to an intelligent designer, making belief in God both rational and supported by scientific evidence. The intricacies of the universe, such as the precise conditions necessary for life, suggest intentional creation. Astrophysicists like Dr. O'Keefe have noted this precision, and the complexity of biochemistry and DNA further supports the idea of intelligent design. This harmony between science and faith encourages believers to see scientific discoveries as a means to understand God's creation better. [02:33]

"For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse." (Romans 1:20, ESV)

Reflection: Consider a recent scientific discovery or fact that amazed you. How can you see God's hand in that discovery, and how does it strengthen your faith?

Day 2: Revelation Through Creation and Scripture
God's nature is revealed through both creation and Scripture. The natural world reflects His handiwork, inspiring many to study the universe with wonder and purpose. This general revelation is accessible to all, showing God's power and creativity. Specific revelation, found in Scripture, offers deeper insights into God's character and will. The Bible, a divinely inspired collection of writings, provides guidance and understanding of God's relationship with humanity. By engaging with both forms of revelation, believers can gain a fuller picture of who God is and how He interacts with the world. [09:28]

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge." (Psalm 19:1-2, ESV)

Reflection: Take a moment to observe nature around you today. What aspects of creation reveal God's character to you, and how can you incorporate this understanding into your daily walk with Him?

Day 3: Jesus as the Ultimate Revelation
Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation of God, providing a historical and tangible manifestation of divine love and truth. His life, teachings, and resurrection are well-documented, offering a clear picture of God's nature and intentions. Jesus' existence and impact are supported by historical evidence, making the claim of His non-existence unfounded. Through Jesus, believers can understand God's love and truth in a personal and transformative way. His teachings challenge us to live according to God's will and to embody His love in our interactions with others. [13:17]

"For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority." (Colossians 2:9-10, ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on a teaching of Jesus that has impacted your life. How can you apply this teaching in a practical way today to demonstrate God's love and truth to those around you?

Day 4: Our Spiritual Identity
We are spiritual beings created in God's image, possessing inherent dignity and worth. Understanding our spiritual identity is crucial, as true transformation begins at the heart level, affecting our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This understanding challenges us to focus on spiritual growth rather than merely physical or external changes. By recognizing our spiritual nature, we can align our lives with God's purpose and seek transformation that reflects His image in us. This journey involves cultivating a heart that is open to God's guidance and committed to living out His values. [23:48]

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27, ESV)

Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you feel disconnected from your spiritual identity. What steps can you take today to realign this area with the understanding that you are created in God's image?

Day 5: The Bible as Nourishment for the Soul
The Bible is a source of nourishment for our souls, providing clarity, guidance, and strength. By studying and meditating on Scripture, believers align themselves with God's truth and allow His Word to transform them from the inside out. The Bible serves as a spiritual mirror, reflecting areas in need of growth, and as a fire, refining and purifying our hearts. Engaging with Scripture is essential for spiritual growth, as it equips us to face life's challenges with faith and wisdom. [41:12]

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105, ESV)

Reflection: Choose a passage of Scripture to meditate on today. How can this passage guide you in a current challenge or decision you are facing?

Quotes

You need to hear this. I consider myself a person of faith, but I also consider myself a very rational, scientific person who looks at the evidence. And so let's just take that approach right there when we're talking about the existence of God. There are so many things that we can talk about, but we're going to talk about six of them. Yeah, there are many more. And the incredible scholars that have written books and talked about this. And if you're into this kind of thing, you can look them up. But we're just going to kind of run through some of those. [00:01:37] (33 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

So basically what are we saying here if we could wrap all this up we're saying that the universe without an intelligent god is so highly improbable that's right almost absurd yeah and that it's again it's very intelligent to believe in the existence in the existence of god in fact i would go so far to say yeah that it takes a profound a lot of faith in fact it takes more faith to believe that everything that we see in the intent of the order design and and the information and uh the d and all of it uh to believe that this just happened by by accident yeah an intelligent god yeah absolutely so when we say a theist what's what's the word theist a theist is a person an intelligent person by the way who has faith uh they believe in god but they believe that that the order around us came by design by intent yeah in other words every design has a designer that's good if i were walking through the forest the jungle in the middle of nowhere right and i looked down and i saw a watch right now i would look and pick the watch up look at it let's just say the little second hand is moving it's keeping time yeah you would come to the conclusion that this just didn't just disappear yeah yeah there must be a watch maker of god. Who am I? One of the most, um, profound impacting world impacting. It doesn't matter what religion you are. Is this idea that we human beings were created in the image and the likeness of God. Look at this is the very beginning of scripture. Genesis one, 27, God's creating, uh, the universe. And please don't read Genesis one and two as a scientific textbook. Right. It's not telling us how God created. It's just telling us that God created. And it's, uh, this story is teaching us some things. Yes. Teaching us about God. Yeah. But it says in 27, you want to pick it up? Yeah. that great? One of the first things that God does is he blesses people. Wow. I want you to understand that those who are on this journey, God wants to bless you. He wants to help you, wants to strengthen you. In fact, in the Hebrew, the picture is that God actually put his hand, uh, on, on Adam and Eve and pronounced blessing. That's good. We're going to learn a little later on. There was a transference of, of blessing over their lives. And that's what God wants to do to us. But God had created, but he comes to one of his final acts of creation and that's people. We are the crown. I want you to hear this. I don't, it's important for young people. It's important for everybody to hear this. You're special. Yeah. You're the crown of, we are the crown of his creation. We were creating his image. [00:22:12] (108 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Jesus is always talking. He talks about a farmer throwing seed out to plant. And then he comes around and says, by the way, that seed. That seed is the word of God is we will plant that seed. What are you talking about? This book, if you will start reading, meditating, think planting it in your soul. In your heart and in your mind, it will bear gravel for you. That's so good. are you going to eat to nourish the real you? That's it. I'm not talking about your body. By the way, we eat to feed our physical bodies, our stomachs. We're so careful to get the right produce. What are you going to eat to feed and nourish your soul? Jesus said you can't live by bread alone, feeding your body. But we live, we're nourished by every word that comes from the mouth of the Father. And are we eating? Absolutely. Who are we listening to? The thought is that just like our physical bodies, we can eat junk food. That'll be available. It doesn't necessarily nourish and bring health to our physical bodies. And in the same way, we can also get caught up in giving our souls junk food. You were talking about TikTok or this or that. one primary thing that will nourish our souls is the very words of God. And then the Word's like a, Scripture calls it like a fire. Look what Jeremiah said. My Word is like a fire. Yeah. You know, some of us need something maybe burned out of our lives or maybe something has us tangled up in ropes and it needs to be burnt and broken off of us. His Word's like a hammer. There might be something hard in our lives. There's nothing more powerful than a Word and clarity from God. Number one is just love it. Love the Word. You might even, that's what we've been praying through this whole lesson. That's it right there. There would start to be a desire and a hunger. Lord, help me to love your Word. Look what Psalm 19, 119, how I love your Word. It's my meditation day. All day. I love your commands. Yeah. So just love the Word. Just begin there. Start falling in love with the Word. Number two is just to simply ask the Holy Spirit. I love that. Holy Spirit, help me. As long as I've been in school, I still sit down regularly, weekly, with this book, not to preach a sermon, not to study for some kind of talk I'm giving, but just to feed my soul. Thank you. And I'll just open up my arms just like this and say, Holy Spirit, speak to me. That's right. Holy Spirit, give me guidance. Yeah. In your name. Amen. Just very simple. And then just open it up and you begin to read. It's not all the time that something like huge spiritual takes place. No, I'm just feeding, feeding my soul. And God is so good to give us things just when we need them. Humility. I'm not. there to critique the bible i'm not there i'm not reading it to gain ior you know right oh my goodness is so good yeah i'm reading it because i need some things to change holy spirit show me something yeah let god's word examine you oh my gosh there it is yeah thank you lord i'm not the one that's exegeting this i'm actually i'm asking what does exegeting mean um it's a big word interpreting explaining okay uh revealing i'm asking this to exegete me my heart to search me out to try me to show me and another important part of of just um honoring god's work is to share what you're learning with somebody else that's so powerful it's why the church family is so important what are we doing with a humble spirit we're not arrogant what are we doing when we come to church or go to a group or you're around with other friends yeah go ahead and share you know i was reading this the other day god spoke this to me and challenged me with this one of my favorite encourages you and encourages him we're sharing with one another
