Both lives have friends, work, family, hobbies, money coming in, and a decent social life on a good day. The difference is not obvious until the storm comes.

The storm in Jesus’ story is the ordinary awful stuff of life. Bad news comes. Jobs disappear. Diagnoses land. Money gets tight. Relationships strain and break. Jesus does not say that one house gets storms and the other one gets blue skies. Matthew five, six, and seven give the words that build the house on the rock. The beatitudes call blessing over the poor, the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure, and even the persecuted. Salt is not just table salt sitting there being stable. Salt is fertilizer, causing good things to grow. Light is meant to shine. Like, there's a lamb that you can paint over your doorpost to save you. There's Psalm 91 that says the pestilence won't come near. The snare, you won't be entrapped. There's even a verse that says the writer has never seen the righteous begging for bread. And they're they're good verses. They're good verses to give thanks for. But it seems to me they're not universal truths. We can overemphasize them, and we can put them in we can give them a place in our theology and our understanding of God that that makes us vulnerable whenever anything bad happens.”
