Andrew’s story begins with John the Baptist pointing away from himself: “Behold, the Lamb of God.” John’s whole purpose was temporary, to lead people to Jesus, and Andrew responds by following Christ, spending time with Him, and realizing that he has found the Messiah. Andrew’s first move after meeting Jesus is not to build his own name or stay in the background with his discovery. Andrew goes and finds Simon, his brother, and brings him to Jesus.

Andrew often carries the title “Simon Peter’s brother,” even though Andrew meets Jesus first. Peter becomes the outspoken disciple, part of Jesus’ inner circle, and one of the great leaders of the early church. Andrew remains mostly in the background, but Andrew becomes a catalyst for Christ. Andrew may not be the Balto who gets remembered at the finish line, but Andrew is like Togo, doing the hard work of bringing the help that saves lives.

Andrew appears again when five thousand hungry people need food. Philip calculates the impossible cost, but Andrew finds a young lad with five barley loaves and two small fish and brings him to Jesus. Andrew does not pretend the small meal is enough. Andrew asks, “What are they among so many?” Yet Andrew still believes Jesus can do something with what is given. Christ takes the little meal and feeds the multitude, with leftovers besides.

Andrew also helps bring Greeks who want to see Jesus. Philip comes to Andrew, perhaps because Andrew has already built a reputation as the disciple who brings people to Christ. Andrew brings family, a child, and receptive people from another culture. Andrew shows that the good news is not meant to stay inside one person’s relationship with Jesus. The good news moves outward, first toward family and close friends, then neighbors, coworkers, and eventually people throughout the world.

Christ calls regular people, not only pastors, Bible workers, or conference leaders, to bring others to Him. Friendship, invitations, prayer, Bible studies, children’s ministry, greeting, cleaning, AV work, and every ministry can become evangelism when they lead people toward Jesus. Christ does not require everyone to stand at the finish line and receive recognition. God notices the quiet person who faithfully brings one more soul to Jesus.
