I came in filled with faith that God is moving for our good, and we opened 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 to remember that generosity doesn’t “just happen”—it’s cultivated. I talked about family traditions—cutting down the Christmas tree, Brittany’s once-a-year breakfast—and how traditions connect past, present, and future. In the same way, God gives holy traditions—Passover, Purim, Communion—so we don’t forget His faithfulness. Paul begins, “Remember this,” because we are forgetful people. We tend to remember what centers us and forget what centers God. But even when we forget, God remembers. You are not forgotten.

From there, we traced a path: promise, purpose, and praise. Promise: God’s economy is sowing and reaping. We cannot outgive Him. What He gives is never lost; it is sown. If the seed stays with me, it stays small; when placed in the hands of the Supplier, it multiplies. Purpose: the “so that” in the text matters. He supplies and increases us so that we can be generous on every occasion. That’s legacy—building for those coming after us through consistent, cheerful, pre-decided generosity. Giving is not a mood; it’s a decision rooted in love. You can give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.

I reminded us that our premise must come from God’s promise, not our preference for how it should look. We might want it fast or familiar; God grows it in His time and way. So we pre-decide to be generous, trusting that His grace abounds and He supplies seed to the sower. Then comes praise: when needs are met through our obedience, thanksgiving overflows to God. That’s why I said, “This didn’t just happen.” We are sitting in the sacrifice of those who sowed before us. Now it’s our turn—burdened hearts that become open hands—so people in our city meet Jesus, families are strengthened, the hungry are fed, and the future of this church is built on generosity that outlives us.
