Breaking Spiritual Strongholds: Finding True Freedom in Christ

Summary

In today's message, we explored the concept of spiritual strongholds, which are akin to addictions that hold us captive and prevent us from living in the freedom that God intends for us. These strongholds are not merely physical or emotional issues but are deeply rooted in spiritual realities. They manifest as addictions or behaviors that we feel powerless to overcome, despite our best efforts through prayer, church attendance, or self-help strategies. The key to breaking free from these strongholds lies in understanding their spiritual nature and addressing them with spiritual solutions.

We examined the biblical perspective on strongholds, particularly through the lens of 2 Corinthians 10, where Paul speaks about the spiritual warfare we engage in. The weapons we use are not of the flesh but are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. These fortresses are mental partitions that block the truth of God from fully penetrating our minds and hearts. This blockage results in a divided mind, where God's truth is in constant competition with worldly or fleshly thoughts.

To dismantle these strongholds, we must abide in the truth of God's Word. This involves more than a casual engagement with Scripture; it requires a deep, continuous immersion in the truth that transforms our minds and aligns our thoughts with God's reality. Jesus emphasized that knowing the truth will set us free, but this freedom is fully realized when we have a relationship with Him, the Son, who holds the key to our liberation.

The journey to freedom involves recognizing our new identity in Christ, as outlined in Romans 6-8. We are no longer slaves to sin but are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live in victory. This transformation is not instantaneous but requires perseverance in the truth and a reliance on the Spirit's power. As we continue in God's Word and call upon the Son, we can experience true freedom, breaking the chains of spiritual slavery and living as God intended.

Day 1: Recognizing Spiritual Strongholds
Spiritual strongholds are deeply rooted in spiritual realities and manifest as addictions or behaviors that seem impossible to overcome. They require spiritual solutions, as they are not merely physical or emotional issues. Recognizing the spiritual nature of these strongholds is the first step toward liberation. These strongholds act as barriers that prevent individuals from experiencing the freedom that God intends for them. Understanding that these are not just habits or emotional struggles but are deeply entrenched spiritual issues is crucial. By acknowledging their spiritual nature, one can begin to seek the appropriate spiritual solutions to dismantle them. [02:14]

"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." (2 Corinthians 10:3-4, ESV)

Reflection: Identify a behavior or thought pattern in your life that feels like a stronghold. How can you begin to address it with spiritual solutions today?

Day 2: The Transformative Power of God's Truth
The truth of God's Word is the key to breaking free from strongholds. This truth is not subjective or based on personal beliefs but is an absolute standard by which reality is measured. Abiding in this truth transforms our minds and aligns our thoughts with God's reality, leading to true freedom. Engaging deeply with Scripture allows individuals to replace the lies and deceptions that have taken root in their minds with the liberating truth of God. This process of transformation is ongoing and requires a commitment to immerse oneself in God's Word continually. [25:08]

"Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth." (John 17:17, ESV)

Reflection: What specific truth from God's Word can you meditate on today to counteract a lie you have believed about yourself or your situation?

Day 3: Dismantling Mental Partitions
Strongholds often involve mental partitions that block God's truth from fully penetrating our minds. This results in a divided mind, where God's truth competes with worldly thoughts. Dismantling these partitions is essential for experiencing the fullness of God's freedom. These mental barriers can be subtle, often manifesting as doubts, fears, or worldly philosophies that contradict God's truth. By identifying and challenging these partitions, individuals can allow God's truth to fully permeate their minds, leading to a unified and undivided heart. [14:55]

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)

Reflection: What worldly thought or belief is currently competing with God's truth in your mind? How can you begin to dismantle this partition today?

Day 4: Embracing Your Identity in Christ
Our new identity in Christ is central to overcoming strongholds. We are no longer slaves to sin but are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live in victory. Embracing this identity and relying on the Spirit's power is crucial for breaking free from spiritual slavery. Understanding and accepting one's identity in Christ involves recognizing that they are a new creation, no longer bound by past sins or failures. This new identity empowers believers to live victoriously, relying on the Holy Spirit's strength rather than their own. [31:10]

"For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'" (Romans 8:15, ESV)

Reflection: How does your identity in Christ empower you to overcome a specific stronghold in your life today?

Day 5: The Journey to True Freedom
True freedom is realized through a relationship with Jesus, the Son, who holds the key to our liberation. This journey involves continuous immersion in God's Word and reliance on the Spirit's power. As we abide in the truth and call upon the Son, we can experience true freedom and live as God intended. This journey is not a one-time event but a lifelong process of growing closer to Jesus and allowing His truth to transform every aspect of one's life. By remaining connected to Him, believers can experience the fullness of the freedom He offers. [39:10]

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36, ESV)

Quotes

The biblical word for what the world calls addiction is stronghold because the biblical word stronghold is referring to the spiritual nature of the addiction. A stronghold is a spiritually based addiction which means if you try to fix an addiction which is really a stronghold without the right spiritual connection you can't be released from it because you haven't dealt with the core issue that's behind it. [00:01:59]

The problem of addiction, a sin that has mastered you or us or me, the problem of addiction has to do with a lofty thing. You see that phrase? He says this lofty thing in verse five has been raised up against the knowledge of God. So let me define the lofty thing. The Greek word lofty, a synonym for it is partition. [00:13:20]

What Paul is saying is the reason why we stay defeated is because of our partition in the mind. There is a blockage in the mind. He says speculations and thoughts raised up, petitioned out against the knowledge of God. So what the enemy does is he sets up a partition in the mind so that the truth of God can't get through. [00:15:03]

The biblical word for this lofty thing is double mindedness. Double mindedness, double - mind thought, thinking in two different directions at the same time, partition. It is the job of Satan to keep you thinking in two ways at the same time. He doesn't mind you getting God's thoughts on Sunday as long as in the other room you have his thoughts on Monday. [00:17:08]

If you continue in my word, then you will know that you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. You only are going to be freed by the truth, okay? Nobody will disagree with that. So let me say it another way: you will only be freed by the truth, not what you believe to be true. [00:24:39]

One of the reasons people stay in strongholds is because they're living on a truth or their truth or some TV program's truth or some cultural truth and not the truth, the absolute standard by which reality is revealed. Here is one of the biggest falsehoods that keep us in custody and locked up spiritually and a stronghold, a spiritual addiction, and that is trying to get the flesh to fix the flesh. [00:26:40]

What many people want to do is get out of their addiction by their own scrubbing effort and for a while it looks like it's clean but when they look it up it ain't that clean and they try again, they try again when God says no, no, no. What you must do, what's this? Verse 31, he says I want you to continue in my truth and you will know the truth. [00:29:15]

The Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. It says it's alive. The book is alive. It's a book but it's alive. Now let me tell you what the book does according to Hebrews 4:12. He says Hebrews 4:12, the Word of God when taken in will divide soul and spirit. The reason why we stay trapped in certain things is because the soul and spirit are not divided. [00:39:38]

He says the Word of God sure cuts between the two so the two are segmented. But then after he says that, he comes to verse 13 and he says and all things are laid bare before his eyes. So in verse 12, he's talking about the Word of God but in verse 13, he talked about his eyes. So he takes the word written and God the person and when the Living Word connects with the written word in your heart, soul, and mind, not only is bail posted but Jesus comes with a key. [00:40:40]

On the cross, Jesus signed your emancipation proclamation and everybody who trusts Christ is redeemed. But Satan doesn't want you to know that. He wants a petition up in your mind so that you don't believe you can walk in freedom. But I'm here to tell you today that he who the Son sets free is free indeed but only if you continue in his word. [00:43:51]

The Word of God post bail but the son has the key to the lock. The bail makes you free, the Sun sets you free. In other words, it is not merely the knowledge of the Bible, it is the relationship with the author that produces the experience of the freedom that you have when you spend time in the work.
