If you would have asked these guys at 6 a.m. what do you think about the owner, oh man he's a great guy, he gave us a job. He negotiated a wage with us. He let us have the benefit of different things throughout the day. He's providing for our family. What a wonderful man. At noon you would have asked, what's going on? What do you think about the owner? Still a great guy, wonderful guy. It's amazing. He's giving all these other people a job also. He's really here for us. It's 5 p.m. You ask the guys, how is this? This guy's been a dream to work with. He's been a great guy to work for. It's been a wonderful day. We've done so much. We've accomplished so much. We're about done with the harvest. It's a wonderful day. 6 p.m. Pay time. This guy's a crook. He's horrible. He's terrible. Why? Because I'm comparing myself to someone else and I think I deserve more than they got.

We compare ourselves to somebody else, we begin to look at them and we begin to say, well I don't have what they have, I don't drive what they drive, I don't live where they live, my bank account isn't as nice, I don't make the income that they have, I don't have the benefits they have. We go on and on and on with the comparisons and you know what, we've been comparing things since the time we were little. Somebody else has a better toy, somebody else has a better meal, somebody else has something better and the comparison trap begins to destroy the joy, the joy in our life. It begins to rob us of so much. We begin to focus on the wrong things. [00:01:18]

Many of us come to church on Sunday morning, not because of our great love for God. But the fact is, we believe that if we don't come, we may miss out on a blessing that God could give us as a result of coming. You know, we're doing it so that we can get something. In other words, I'm coming and I'm being devoted and I'm giving my tithe and I'm doing all these things so that I can prove to God that I'm worthy of getting a blessing this week. Hmm. In other words, what's in it for me? [00:03:21]

Their expectations changed because they started comparing themselves to everybody else around them. What they were getting, what was happening. We do the same thing. I do the same thing. And sometimes the joy in my life, the joy in your life, is stolen away because we look at what somebody else has. Their salary is more. Their this is more. Their that is more. They have better benefits. They have better income. They have better everything. Simply because our expectations aren't met. Everything changes. [00:09:47]

The comparison trap, the trap part of it first, it moves our focus to others and away from God. We start looking at what they've got, what we start comparing what they have, what they're doing, what their talent is, what their gifts are, how much money they make. We start comparing that to what we think we should have because we're just as committed, maybe even more committed, maybe we've been a part of everything longer, we've committed to the work longer, we've worked harder than other people, but yet they're getting more than us. Our focus changes from God to them and it's because of our heart and it gets us in the wrong place. [00:12:24]

When you and I begin take our focus off of God and look at all the other things that we don't get, we don't have, we should have, when we begin to look at how God blesses someone else and forget how God has blessed us, then the power of God's word to work in our life fails, fails. Not because the word is powerless, not because God is not generous, but because we no longer are focused on the right thing. [00:13:51]

When we compare ourselves to others, we become exactly the same way as the Israelites. The third thing I want us to see the comparison trap does, is it leads us to wrong personal emotions. They have grumbled. In your scripture, you could write, they grumbled, grumbled, grumbled, grumbled, grumbled, grumbled, because the tense of what it is, is that they were constantly grumbling against the owner. Why? because they compared themselves to somebody else these people these people that only worked one hour you have made us equal to them we're better than that. [00:18:31]

In our emotional struggles there we get depressed because we don't have as much, we get to feeling like we're unappreciated, we get feeling jealous, we get frustrated, we get angry and our emotions folks are leading us the wrong way so so get a hold of yourself get your focus back right. [00:19:57]

Understand that God can do whatever he wants. Now that seems like a very flippant statement but it is. I mean you think about this because Peter near the end of his life or near the end of Jesus's life in an engagement with Jesus Jesus gets Peter aside and he gives him in some some instructions as to what's going to be going on and he says Peter I need you to know one of these days you're going to be taken to your own death in a way you don't want to have. And you know what Peter does? He turns around and he sees John and he says, what about him? Listen to what Jesus says. I tell you what, this is, to me, it's cold. Listen, Jesus said to him, if I want him to remain until I come, what's that to you? If I want to bless somebody else with more income than you got, what's that to you? If I want to give somebody a talent or a gift or a blessing that I don't give you, what's that to you? If I want them to live longer or live shorter, what is that to you? And then he tells Peter one thing that we need to focus on. You follow me. [00:20:47]

You aren't the owner of even yourself. As a believer in Jesus Christ, you were bought with a price. You are bought and paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ. And you personally do not own one moment of your life from now on. You're His. He can do with you whatever He wants. [00:23:49]

We miss it so many times because we're comparing all these other things. Understand, God owns it all. Another thing that will help us overcome this is to acknowledge that having Jesus is the most important thing in our life. The most important thing. God saved us. You know, a while ago we were talking about...We want what we deserve. He is the most important thing in our life. [00:25:01]

This is the idea that without God we cannot survive. Without God we cannot live. So what we need to do is seek God earnestly. Pursue Him with our life. In Colossians chapter 3 verses 2 and 3 it says, Set your mind. Stop right there. Set. Choose. You choose what you put your mind on. Oh, but my mind wonders. Choose to put it back. Oh, but I think the pressing thoughts. Choose to put it back. Oh, but I get excited about things and it just kind of goes off. Choose. You choose. I choose. Set your mind on things above. Not on things that are on the earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. What a powerful, powerful statement. [00:27:56]

Recognize that our envious spirit reveals more about us and nothing about God. You see, God is not defined by your disappointment. God is not defined by your doubts. You doubt the goodness of God, it doesn't change God. You doubt the reliability of God, it doesn't change God. You doubt the fairness of God, it doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. It doesn't change God. is what is going on in your mind and your heart and your soul and your life. You see, God is good. And we need to celebrate that. [00:29:19]

Instead of these workers looking and saying, hey, look, those guys that worked an hour got the same as what we contracted for. Isn't that an amazingly generous honor? I tell you, it's hard to celebrate somebody else's victory, isn't it? You know it is. But it just points out our heart, not God. So maybe we just need to stop and say, thank you, God, for being a good God. Thank you for being a gracious God. Thank you for not giving us what we deserve. [00:30:21]

Because you see, when we sit here and go, oh, I should get what I deserve. Okay, let's stop just a moment. What do you deserve? The Bible says you are a deceitfully wicked person apart from Jesus Christ. What do you deserve? You deserve hell. You deserve death and separation from God. You deserve that. Do you think that's what you... No, it's not fair. God should be a God of love. He should be a God of patience. He should give me more time. He should give me... Listen, what we're doing is we're saying, We want it to be fair based on what our opinion of fairness is. God says the only opinion of fair that matters is His. [00:31:09]

And you know what He thought was fair? That He loved you so much. That He loved me so much. That He would send His Son to die on a cross for you. That, to me, is not fair. Why should Jesus Christ die on a cross for me, for my sin? When He did nothing wrong, it was me that failed. [00:31:47]

Maybe one of the things we need to stop and do this week is just list the blessings of God. You see, because we can go and look at other people and say how God has blessed them. And we come back and we say sometimes we don't even see God's blessings for us. [00:33:45]

We get so caught up in comparing ourselves to others, others, we forget all the many, And then lastly, take time to notice that God is generous. From your list, you can begin. But then begin to celebrate those people around you and how God is good in their life. Thank you, God, that you gave them more money than me, because they're using it well in your kingdom. Thank you, Lord, that they have a gift of singing that I don't. [00:35:25]

But ultimately think about this Ephesians chapter 1 verse 7 through 9 says in him we have redemption through his According to his the riches of his grace. He didn't give you what you deserved. He gave you grace which he lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his kind intention which he purposed in him. Wow. Let's stop comparing. Let's start praising. Let's rend our hearts and turn back to God. Let's thank him for being a gracious and compassionate Lord. Let's stop thinking about what we don't have and start utilizing properly what we've got. Because here's one fact the Lord says he will never bless you with something that he cannot trust you with. Wow. [00:36:52]

For us today, many of us in this place, we're believers. And we've been robbed of our joy many, many times, too many. Because we've compared what we've got with someone else. Let's stop. Refocus our attention. And praise God. [00:40:06]
