Bible ReadingIsaiah 41:1-42:9 “Keep silence before Me, O coastlands,
And let the people renew their strength!
Let them come near, then let them speak;
Let us come near together for judgment.
Who raised up one from the east?
Who in righteousness called him to His feet?
Who gave the nations before him,
And made him rule over kings?
Who gave them as the dust to his sword,
As driven stubble to his bow?
Who pursued them, and passed safely
By the way that he had not gone with his feet?
Who has performed and done it,
Calling the generations from the beginning?
‘I, the Lord, am the first;
And with the last I am He.’
The coastlands saw it and feared,
The ends of the earth were afraid;
They drew near and came.
Everyone helped his neighbor,
And said to his brother, ‘Be of good courage!’
So the craftsman encouraged the goldsmith;
He who smooths with the hammer inspired him who strikes the anvil,
Saying, ‘It is ready for the soldering’;
Then he fastened it with pegs,
That it might not totter.
‘But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
The descendants of Abraham My friend.
You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its farthest regions,
And said to you,
“You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not cast you away:
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
‘Behold, all those who were incensed against you
Shall be ashamed and disgraced;
They shall be as nothing,
And those who strive with you shall perish.
You shall seek them and not find them—
Those who contended with you.
Those who war against you
Shall be as nothing,
As a nonexistent thing.
For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand,
Saying to you, “Fear not, I will help you.”
‘Fear not, you worm Jacob,
You men of Israel!
I will help you,’ says the Lord
And your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
‘Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth;
You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small,
And make the hills like chaff.
You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away,
And the whirlwind shall scatter them;
You shall rejoice in the Lord,
And glory in the Holy One of Israel.
‘The poor and needy seek water, but there is none,
Their tongues fail for thirst.
I, the Lord, will hear them;
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
I will open rivers in desolate heights,
And fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
And the dry land springs of water.
I will plant in the wilderness the cedar and the acacia tree,
The myrtle and the oil tree;
I will set in the desert the cypress tree and the pine
And the box tree together,
That they may see and know,
And consider and understand together,
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
And the Holy One of Israel has created it.
‘Present your case,’ says the Lord.
‘Bring forth your strong reasons,’ says the King of Jacob.
‘Let them bring forth and show us what will happen;
Let them show the former things, what they were,
That we may consider them,
And know the latter end of them;
Or declare to us things to come.
Show the things that are to come hereafter,
That we may know that you are gods;
Yes, do good or do evil,
That we may be dismayed and see it together.
Indeed you are nothing,
And your work is nothing;
He who chooses you is an abomination.
‘I have raised up one from the north,
And he shall come;
From the rising of the sun he shall call on My name;
And he shall come against princes as though mortar,
As the potter treads clay.
Who has declared from the beginning, that we may know?
And former times, that we may say, “He is righteous”?
Surely there is no one who shows,
Surely there is no one who declares,
Surely there is no one who hears your words.
The first time I said to Zion, “Look, there they are!”
And I will give to Jerusalem one who brings good tidings.
For I looked, and there was no man;
I looked among them, but there was no counselor,
Who, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
Indeed they are all worthless;
Their works are nothing;
Their molded images are wind and confusion.
‘Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.’
Thus says God the Lord,
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:
‘I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the Gentiles,
To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
I am the Lord, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.’”

And their precious things shall not profit;
They are their own witnesses;
They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.
Who would form a god or mold an image
That profits him nothing?
Surely all his companions would be ashamed;
And the workmen, they are mere men.
Let them all be gathered together,
Let them stand up;
Yet they shall fear,
They shall be ashamed together.
The blacksmith with the tongs works one in the coals,
Fashions it with hammers,
And works it with the strength of his arms.
Even so, he is hungry, and his strength fails;
He drinks no water and is faint.
The craftsman stretches out his rule,
He marks one out with chalk;
He fashions it with a plane,
He marks it out with the compass,
And makes it like the figure of a man,
According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.
He cuts down cedars for himself,
And takes the cypress and the oak;
He secures it for himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.
Then it shall be for a man to burn,
For he will take some of it and warm himself;
Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread;
Indeed he makes a god and worships it;
He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.
He burns half of it in the fire;
With this half he eats meat;
He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.
He even warms himself and says, ‘Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire.’
And the rest of it he makes into a god,
His carved image.
He falls down before it and worships it,
Prays to it and says, ‘Deliver me, for you are my god!’
They do not know nor understand;
For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see,
And their hearts, so that they cannot understand.
And no one considers in his heart,
Nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
‘I have burned half of it in the fire,
Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals;
I have roasted meat and eaten it;
And shall I make the rest of it an abomination?
Shall I fall down before a block of wood?’
He feeds on ashes;
A deceived heart has turned him aside;
And he cannot deliver his soul,
Nor say, ‘Is there not a lie in my right hand?’”

[30:37] [31:53]Observation questions- In Isaiah 41, what are the nations doing when they are afraid, and what does that reveal about the kind of help they are turning to? [07:30]
- What repeated promises does God make to Israel in Isaiah 41:8-14, especially around fear, help, strength, and His hand? [10:22]
- In Isaiah 41:17-20, what different kinds of provision does God promise for the poor and needy in dry places? [18:15]
- In Isaiah 42:1-4, what details are given about the Lord’s Servant’s character and mission? [31:53]
Interpretation questions- God says, “Fear not, I will help you,” and also says, “I will hold your right hand.” What does that suggest about the kind of help God gives His people when they feel weak or unsteady? [10:56]
- Isaiah mocks idols for needing to be made, fastened, and kept from tottering. Why is that such a strong picture of the foolishness of idolatry, and why are people still drawn to false helps like that? [07:30]
- God not only gives water to the thirsty, but also trees and shade in the wilderness. What does that show about the way God cares for His people beyond their most obvious request? [18:15]
- Isaiah 42 says the Servant is gentle with bruised reeds and faint wicks, yet He will not fail or be discouraged. Why is it important to hold those two truths together when thinking about Jesus? [31:53]
Application questions- Many distractions promise relief, escape, or control, but they cannot truly help. What tends to pull the heart away from God most easily right now: comfort, entertainment, worry, success, another person’s approval, or something else? [28:07]
- God holds unsteady hands. Where does life currently feel shaky or close to the edge, and what would it look like to trust His grip there instead of pretending to be strong? [10:56]
- God supplies what is lacking and sometimes gives more than was even asked for. Can the group think of a season where God provided not only the “water” needed, but also unexpected “shade”? How did that affect gratitude toward Him? [18:15]
- False helps often become most attractive when God seems slow. When prayers feel delayed, what substitute helps become tempting to trust, and how can those be recognized earlier? [28:18]
- The world offers pleasures that look harmless at first but can become traps. What warning lights have been flashing lately that should not be ignored? [35:01]
- Jesus is gentle enough not to break a bruised reed. For someone who feels worn down, ashamed, or spiritually tired, how does that change the way they might come to Him this week? [31:53]
- Jesus will not fail. How could daily life look different this week if the heart stayed fixed on Him instead of on outcomes, pressures, or quick fixes? [34:58]
