Bible reading: John 21:1-14 (ESV)
After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Observation questions
- What were the disciples doing when Jesus appeared to them, and what was the result of their efforts before he spoke?
- What specific, simple instruction did the man on the shore give them, and what was the immediate result of their obedience?
- What did the disciple whom Jesus loved realize and declare when he saw the miraculous catch of fish?
- What simple, ordinary activity did Jesus invite them to do with him after they came ashore?
Interpretation questions
- Why is it significant that Jesus performed a miracle related to their work (fishing) and then shared a common meal with them?
- The disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. What might their failure represent, and how does Jesus' intervention change the situation?
- The sermon states that salvation is opened to all through Christ's work, even for those who do not know him explicitly [16:09]. How does this story illustrate God's generous initiative versus human effort?
- How does the story connect the ideas of ordinary work, listening to Jesus' voice, and experiencing his abundance?
Application questions
- In what area of your daily life or work have you recently felt like you were "fishing all night and catching nothing"—a sense of struggle, frustration, or lack of fruitfulness?
- The risen Christ appears in ordinary tasks, making daily labor a venue for encountering grace [17:48]. What is one routine part of your week (e.g., commuting, housework, your job) that you could consciously invite Jesus into this week?
- Holiness often grows through repetition, care, and loyalty to ordinary duties [19:15]. Who is someone in your life, like the parishioner mentioned, whose faithful service in everyday things has been a quiet example to you? What did you learn from them?
- The Eucharist is the offered, living memorial that makes the paschal mystery present [29:15]. How can participating in communion shape your attitude and actions toward the "ordinary" struggles and people you will face in the coming week?
- Jesus' command to cast the net on the other side was simple but specific. What is one simple, practical step you feel prompted to take in a situation where you've been struggling?
- The shared breakfast restored relationship. Is there a relationship in your life that feels strained or distant that could be helped by sharing a simple meal or conversation? What would be a first step?
