Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.’ And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’ And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’ For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’ And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.”
[42:50]John 21:1-14 “After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, ‘Children, do you have any fish?’ They answered him, ‘No.’ He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.’ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Now none of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.”

- What details in Luke 5 show Peter had already worked hard before Jesus told him to let down the nets again? [48:13]
- In both Luke 5 and John 21, what repeated pattern shows up in Peter’s fishing experience before Jesus provides the catch?
- In John 21, what does Jesus already have waiting on the shore before the disciples bring in any of their fish? [54:10]
Interpretation questions- Jesus did not need Peter’s boat, yet He chose to get into it. What does that suggest about the way Jesus enters an ordinary person’s life through something already in that person’s hands? [45:27]
- Peter knew fishing well, yet his empty nets became the setting for a miracle. Why does God sometimes meet people right in the area where they feel most confident or most capable? [48:32]
- Peter saw miracles, walked with Jesus, and still failed in serious ways. How does Peter’s story help explain the difference between genuinely following Jesus and living a flawless Christian life? [51:40]
- Peter’s faith did not fully come together through the walk with Jesus alone or even through the cross alone. Why is the resurrection necessary to make Christian faith complete? [55:44]
Application questions- Everybody has a “boat” of some kind—something available, ordinary, or already in hand. What might that boat be in this season of life: a home, a skill, a relationship, a job, a class, a place of service, or something else? How could Jesus use it to get closer to other people? [46:34]
- Peter had to say, “At thy word,” after a night of coming up empty. Where has discouragement started to shape expectations lately? What would obedience look like there even if the last attempt seemed like a failure? [43:42]
- Peter’s failures did not cancel his calling. Where is there a temptation to assume that past inconsistency, shame, or weakness makes a person unusable to God now? How does Peter’s story push back on that? [50:30]
- It is possible to admire Jesus, respect the cross, and still not rest personally in the risen Lord. Has faith become mainly familiarity with Christian things, or is there a real trust in the living Christ right now? [56:04]
- A line left in the boat catches nothing. What tends to keep a person silent about Christ—fear, awkwardness, feeling unqualified, not noticing opportunities, or something else? Which of those feels most real right now? [58:51]
- Some people clearly look like they are struggling, and others look like they have everything together. Who in everyday life might need a word about Jesus, an offer of prayer, or a simple conversation this week? [59:15]
- Peter was told he would catch men. If telling others about Christ is not a side issue but part of the center of Christian life, what small, honest step could be taken this week to put the line in the water? [57:25]
