The Bread of Life | Pastor Joel King

Jesus begins with the question beneath all the other questions: do people recognize their true need? Immediate needs are real. Food, healing, money, security, stronger relationships, and help for struggling children all matter. But immediate needs are not always ultimate needs, because today’s answered prayer can become tomorrow’s new hunger.

John 6 places a crowd in front of Jesus that wants more bread. The crowd has seen him feed thousands, crossed the lake looking for him, and found him. Yet Jesus says they have seen him and still do not believe. The crowd wants a gift from Jesus, while Jesus offers himself as the gift.

Jesus declares, “I am the bread of life.” The claim is not that he can give bread that satisfies, but that he himself is the bread. Coming to Jesus and believing in Jesus belong together. Physical closeness, church familiarity, Christian morality, or knowledge of facts about Jesus do not equal entrusting a life to him.

The Father draws, teaches, and initiates, while those drawn hear, learn, come, look, and believe. Salvation begins with God, so faith leaves no room for spiritual pride. Jesus also gives tremendous assurance: whoever comes to him will never be driven away, and none whom the Father gives him will be lost. The bread of life does not merely help people cope with life. Jesus promises eternal life and resurrection on the last day.

The crowd grumbles because Jesus does not fit the Messiah they wanted. Familiarity blinds them. They know Joseph, Mary, and his hometown, so they assume they know the whole story. Their grumbling echoes Israel in the wilderness, where God’s provision was met with complaint instead of trust.

Jesus contrasts manna with himself. Manna was a real gift from God, but everyone who ate it eventually died. Every earthly provision has limits, even health, money, family, work, and comfort. This is the land of the dying, while eternity is the land of the living.

Jesus finally says that the bread is his flesh, given for the life of the world. The crowd wants bread from his hands, but Jesus gives his body on the cross. Separation from God is the deepest problem beneath every other struggle, and Jesus gives himself to restore that relationship. Faith reorients life around Jesus as the true need, trusting him even when his answer does not look like the answer desired.
