Bible Reading
John 3:1–211–2. Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
[32:50]3–8. Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
[32:50]9–15. “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
[32:50]16–18. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
[41:35]19–21. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
[41:35]Numbers 21:4–94–5. They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”
[39:28]6–7. Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
[40:36]8–9. The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
[40:36]Matthew 4:4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
[29:39]Matthew 12:3He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?”
[29:28]Observation questions
- What details in John 3:1–2 show that Nicodemus was respected, educated, and powerful, yet still came to Jesus with unanswered questions?
- What contrast does Jesus make between what flesh produces and what the Spirit produces in John 3:5–8? [34:00]
- In Numbers 21, what had the Israelites done, and what did God tell them to do in order to live after they were bitten?
- According to John 3:19–21, why do people avoid the light, and what does someone who lives by the truth do instead? [46:20]
Interpretation questions
- Nicodemus recognized that God was with Jesus, but Jesus immediately spoke about being born again. Why was recognizing Jesus as a teacher not enough for Nicodemus?
- Jesus compares the Spirit’s work to the wind. How does this picture show that spiritual rebirth cannot be manufactured by religious activity, family background, or human effort? [37:27]
- In what ways does the bronze serpent in Numbers 21 help explain Jesus’ words that the Son of Man must be lifted up? What did both groups of people need to do in response to God’s provided rescue? [40:42]
- John 3:16–18 says that God sent His Son to save the world, while unbelief leaves a person condemned already. How do these verses hold together God’s love, the offer of salvation, and the seriousness of rejecting Christ? [44:48]
Application questions
- Nicodemus had knowledge, position, and religious respectability, but he still needed new life from the Spirit. Are there places where church involvement, good behavior, knowledge, or reputation can become a substitute for personally trusting Christ? [48:49]
- Jesus answered temptation with, “It is written.” What is one practical rhythm that could help each person spend more time reading Scripture this week rather than depending only on someone else’s understanding of it? [29:03]
- The light of Christ exposes things people may prefer to keep hidden. Is there an area of sin, fear, false security, or woundedness that needs to be brought honestly into Christ’s light? What might taking one faithful step toward the light look like? [49:50]
- The Israelites could not heal themselves from the snakebite; they had to look to God’s provided rescue. When guilt, failure, or shame rises up, is the usual response to work harder, hide, or look again to Christ crucified? [40:42]
- God loved the world and gave His Son for whoever believes. Who is someone in a different background, belief system, social circle, or lifestyle whom it may be easy to overlook as a person deeply loved by God? How could Christ’s love be shown to that person this week? [43:22]
- Believers are called to live in the light so that people still in darkness can see where true life is found. What would it look like for the group to show Christ’s light through humility, honesty, compassion, and faithfulness in everyday relationships? [48:01]
