Can These Bones Live? God Breathes New Life

Ezekiel 37 begins with the hand of the Lord bringing Ezekiel into a valley full of bones. The bones are not sick bodies or recently dead bodies. They are very dry, as if death has had a long time to settle in. Israel is standing behind those bones, a people in exile who can only say, “Our bones are dried up and our hope is lost. We are indeed cut off.”

God’s people had not earned restoration. Israel had given itself to idolatry, corruption, oppression, violence, and injustice. Jerusalem had fallen, the temple had been destroyed, families had been scattered, and everything that made life stable had been shaken. The Valley of Dry Bones is therefore not a story of God rewarding good people who finally got themselves together. God meets a morally compromised, spiritually exhausted, politically defeated people and speaks life where everyone else has already declared death.

The Lord’s question to Ezekiel lands right in the middle of the valley: “Son of man, can these bones live?” God does not first give Ezekiel a preview. God asks him to look directly at death and answer. Ezekiel’s response becomes the honest shape of faith: “Oh Lord God, you know.” Ezekiel does not manufacture confidence, but he also does not surrender to despair. The answer belongs to God, because resurrection was never Ezekiel’s to accomplish.

God then calls Ezekiel to speak. Ezekiel still has to prophesy, still has to obey, still has to participate. But Ezekiel is not confused about where the life comes from. Ezekiel speaks, and God raises the dead. The bones begin to rattle, bone comes to bone, tendons form, flesh appears, and skin covers them. Resurrection is beautiful, but it is also noisy and slow. God’s restoring work often begins before it can be recognized.

The vision also gives a warning. The bodies have structure, but there is no breath in them. A life, a church, or a ministry can look put together and still desperately need the breath of God. The Hebrew word ruach means breath, wind, and Spirit. God does not merely reconstruct what has fallen apart. God breathes his own life into the slain, and they stand.

Ezekiel’s open graves point forward to Jesus Christ. In Christ, God enters death itself, and death no longer gets the final word. Resurrection is not a ticket to an easy life. Resurrection forms people for communion, generosity, justice, welcome, and the life of God’s coming kingdom here and now.
