Paul takes Romans 12 from the altar into the church. Romans 12:1-2 calls God’s people to put the whole life before God as a living, holy, acceptable sacrifice, moved by the mercy of God, washed by the Word of God, and transformed by the Holy Spirit. Romans 12:3 then shows what that altar life looks like inside the body of Christ.
Paul begins with thoughts toward one another. Paul says through the grace given to him that nobody should think of himself more highly than he ought to think. Paul knows his own life is not a reward for being special, smart, or gifted. Paul was once the enemy of the church, but God’s grace made him a servant of Jesus Christ. That grace levels every person in the room. Sin brings every person down to the same place, and grace lifts every believer by the mercy of God.
The haughty look has no place in the body of Christ. God hates that prideful way of looking down on somebody else. The opposite error also has no place, where a person feels like nothing, like there is no place to belong, like God is doing something glorious in everybody else but not in that life. God has dealt to each one a measure of faith, and God is doing something unique in every believer. The stones of the temple, even the hidden foundation stones nobody saw, were still beautifully shaped. God shapes living stones the same way.
Paul then speaks of unity. The body has many members, and all the members do not have the same function. The eye does not wish to be the heel, and the liver does not wander off to try life in the pancreas. The body glorifies God by doing what it was made to do. The church is the body of Christ, and every member is called to function, not just to be present.
Paul then speaks of gifts. Prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading, and mercy all come according to grace. The Holy Spirit gives gifts, stirs desire, and equips God’s people to serve. Gifts are not badges to admire. Gifts are given to be used for the body. When every part does its share, the body grows, builds itself up, and ends where God always intended it to end, in love.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace levels every proud look Paul’s own story makes pride look foolish. The man who became a great servant of Christ first knew himself as a sinner saved only by grace, not as someone better than the church. The body of Christ cannot breathe rightly when a haughty look is allowed to stay. Grace teaches sober thinking because every believer stands on mercy, not merit. [58:26]
- 2. Hidden stones still matter deeply The temple stones under the ground were carved with the same care as the stones everyone could see. God’s work in a hidden life is not lesser because fewer people notice it. The body of Christ needs servants whose faithfulness may stay underground, because beauty before God is not measured by visibility. A quiet place in the structure can still carry holy weight. [60:55]
- 3. The body must actually function Paul’s image of the body will not let church membership become mere attendance. A leg that stays connected but refuses to move creates weakness in the whole body. The Holy Spirit baptizes believers into the body so that each part supplies something for the health of all. Presence matters, but functioning love is the calling. [66:10]
- 4. Gifts are given to be used Paul does not allow a gift to become something a person simply claims to have. The grace of God gives gifts for the building up of the church, not for private identity or spiritual decoration. Prophecy speaks God’s Word, ministry serves real needs, exhortation puts an arm around someone, and giving releases what the hand has received. A gift becomes faithful when it blesses the body. [69:18]
- 5. Mercy alters somebody’s own life Mercy is not just feeling bad for someone in need. Mercy changes the schedule, shifts the plan, and makes room for another person’s burden. Compassion becomes Christlike when it costs convenience and moves toward the wounded. The mercy shown to abandoned children in the Father’s Home gives a living picture of love that rearranges life for the sake of another. [79:55]
