Exodus 12 puts the Passover right at the center of Israel’s life. God tells Moses and Aaron that this rescue will become the beginning of months, the event by which God’s people order their calendar, their memory, and their identity. The Passover is not just something Israel experienced once. It becomes the night when God picked them, chose them, and led them out of slavery.
The plagues show God going after every false god Egypt trusted. The Nile, frogs, gnats, flies, and every other so-called power are exposed as powerless before the true God. The strikes and counterstrikes in Exodus also show up throughout Scripture. Moses moves to deliver God’s people, Pharaoh pushes back, and yet God keeps advancing his rescue. The gospel still meets adversity and pushback, but that does not mean Christians stop moving with the hope of Jesus anyway.
The tenth plague reaches beyond the distinction between Egypt and Israel because physical deliverance is never enough. The line between good and bad runs down the center of every human heart. God’s justice holds every heart accountable, and God’s mercy provides a substitute. In every house, there is either a dead lamb or a dead firstborn. The lamb dies so the people may live.
The lamb and the blood become the key to the whole night. The blood on the doorposts marks those who trust God’s provision, and the destroyer passes over them. The power does not rest on the strength of a person’s feelings, preparation, or maturity. The power rests in the blood. The person who comes under the blood at the last minute is as secure as the person who has carefully prepared for fourteen days, because salvation is God’s work.
Jesus fulfills every detail. John the Baptist calls him “the Lamb of God.” Jesus dies at the hour the Passover lambs are sacrificed. None of his bones are broken. At the Lord’s Supper, the lamb is no longer merely on the table, because the Lamb is sitting at the table. The blood of Jesus speaks a better word: pardon, peace, rescue, and life beyond darkness and death. Under the blood is the reigning power of Jesus, and there is no better place to be.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The blood speaks a better word The blood of Jesus does not leave a guilty conscience to negotiate its own pardon. The blood declares that Christ has taken the judgment sin deserves and has opened a real way into peace with God. Christian hope rests not in spiritual performance but in the finished work of the Lamb. [25:42]
- 2. Passover orders the people’s whole life God makes rescue the beginning of Israel’s calendar because deliverance is not a side note in the life of faith. The people of God remember who they were, who rescued them, and where their life is headed through this defining act. The Lord’s Supper carries that same rescue into the ongoing life of the church. [29:11]
- 3. Every heart needs deeper redemption The tenth plague shows that nobody stands outside the need for mercy. External circumstances can change while the human heart remains bent toward sin, fear, and self-rule. Jesus is both just and justifier because only he can bear judgment and make sinners right with God. [39:05]
- 4. Trust the blood, not spiritual effort The security of salvation does not rise and fall with confidence, experience, or the length of someone’s faith journey. The decisive question is whether a person has come under the blood of Christ by faith. The Lamb’s work is strong enough to give a believer full assurance. [43:20]
- 5. The Lamb has made a way Jesus does not merely resemble the Passover lamb in a vague symbolic sense. The details of his death line up with God’s ancient rescue pattern, showing that Scripture has been pointing toward him all along. Darkness and death do not get the final word because the Lamb has made a way through them. [46:43]
