A new beginning does not wait for January or anybody’s calendar. God is still unfolding his mystery, even when the year has not gone the way somebody planned. God set seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter in motion, and every season carries an opportunity for a fresh start.
God called Abraham and Sarah before God prepared them. God did not call them because they were already qualified, but God called them so that God himself could qualify them. Abraham’s long wait for Isaac shows that promise does not always happen instantly, yet God keeps working step by step. Joseph’s pit, prison, and rise in Egypt show that God can place somebody strategically for a divine purpose, even when the road looks messed up.
Exodus carries the picture of going out: from captivity to freedom, from despair to hope, from being nobodies to covenant relationship with Yahweh. God turned the family called in Genesis into a nation in Exodus, though that nation first found itself under a king who did not know Joseph. Israel’s groaning went up to God, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God’s remembrance declares that labor in the Lord does not go in vain, even when generations come and go.
God met Moses at the burning bush when Moses was a fugitive, a shepherd, and full of excuses. Moses’ weakness did not cancel God’s call, because God promised, “I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak.” God showed Pharaoh and Egypt that no ruler rises beyond God’s notice and that no earthly power can stop what God has purposed.
Goshen became a sign that God can set apart his people in the middle of trouble. God kept the flies out of Goshen while Egypt suffered, showing that God remains in control in the midst of the earth. Moses’ demand grew from a short journey into the wilderness to a complete departure: young and old, sons and daughters, flocks and herds. God’s deliverance does not leave the household behind.
Exodus 12 announces that God can declare, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months.” God can start a life again in the middle of September, after years of pain, delay, or captivity. The blood of the lamb marked Israel’s doors, and the blood of Jesus marks those who believe. Christ died so that death and hell would not have the final word. The Holy Spirit seals believers in Christ, and faith receives the new beginning God has already opened.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God starts fresh in any season God does not need a new calendar year to begin a new work. A painful past may feel long, but it does not own the future when God says, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months.” New beginnings come by God’s authority, not by human timing or perfect conditions. [61:17]
- 2. God remembers covenant cries Israel’s groaning was not lost in Egypt’s noise. God heard their cry and remembered the covenant made generations earlier. God’s faithfulness reaches beyond the visible results of present labor and keeps hold of promises that seem buried. [47:27]
- 3. God qualifies those he calls Moses stood before God with fear, failure, and excuses. God did not deny Moses’ weakness, but God promised his presence and provided what Moses lacked. Calling rests first on God’s purpose, not on somebody’s polished ability. [53:31]
- 4. The blood marks God’s people The Passover blood was not decoration on a doorpost but God’s appointed sign of protection from death. Jesus fulfills that picture by giving himself so that believers may be sealed in him. Faith does not earn this mark; faith receives what Christ has accomplished.
