Everything does not happen “for a reason” in the way people often mean it. Romans 8:28 says God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him, including the things that came through a fallen world, other people, and personal choices. First Corinthians 10:13 promises a way out of temptation, not a life that will never feel like more than a person can handle. God allows seasons that completely overwhelm human strength, but Christ gives strength to overcome.
David’s story in 1 Samuel 30 puts that truth right in front of the church. David returns to Ziklag after facing resistance, only to find the town burned, possessions gone, and wives and children carried away. The Amalekite attack leaves David and his men weeping until they have no strength left. David’s mighty men then let grief become bitterness, and bitterness turns toward stones aimed at David.
Bitterness is pain that a person keeps. Purpose is pain that a person gives to God. Spiritual warfare often works through lies that either minimize pain, saying it was not a big deal, or trap a person inside pain through shame and blame. Satan has no authority over those who belong to Christ, but he actively looks for opportunities to trip, entangle, divide, and make God’s people ineffective.
David gives a different response. David does not deny the loss, rush past the grief, or pretend that everything is fine. David strengthens himself in the Lord, seeks God’s direction, and asks whether he should pursue the raiders. God tells David to go, and David obeys before knowing what he will find.
Restoration does not mean going back to the way things were. David recovers every person and every possession, but Ziklag is still ashes and the men still have homes to rebuild. God does not always reverse what happened, but God reclaims and redeems what is handed to Him. God’s comfort becomes a purpose when restored people return to the brook, walk alongside the exhausted, and share what God has given them.
The call is not a clean-yourself-up story. The call is a grace-not-grit story. God rewrites stories when shame, blame, pride, and pain no longer get the final word.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Bitterness keeps pain; purpose gives it. Bitterness is not merely a passing feeling but a condition that can settle deep in the soul. Pain that is held onto will eventually get transferred onto other people through blame, anger, and unfiltered reactions. God invites wounded people to hand Him the pain so that it becomes part of a redeemed story rather than a weapon. [27:29]
- 2. Respond slowly instead of reacting blindly. Reaction comes fast, often before the mind has engaged, especially when old grief or trauma gets triggered. Response slows down, acknowledges what is happening, and seeks the Lord’s strength before words or actions come spilling out. David’s grief was real, but David refused to let grief decide his next step. [23:35]
- 3. God meets honest grief with strength. David and his men wept until they had no strength left, and Scripture does not shame them for it. Lament names the loss before God instead of burying it under a tough exterior or a pity party. God can use an empty vessel when pain, pride, and self-protection are finally brought into the light. [40:47]
- 4. Restoration is redemption, not reversal. David got back what the Amalekites took, yet the ashes of Ziklag still remained. God does not promise that every broken thing will return exactly as it was, but God does promise His presence, love, and redeeming work. A reclaimed story refuses to let Satan, trauma, or loss have the final word. [46:53]
- 5. Comfort received becomes comfort shared. David refused to leave behind the two hundred men who were too exhausted to continue. God gives comfort in trouble so restored people can walk beside those still sitting at the brook without strength. A redemption story becomes purpose when it helps another person believe that God has not abandoned them.
