Bible ReadingGenesis 1:1-31 — “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, ‘Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.’ And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.’ So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.’ And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”
[43:49]Romans 1:18-25 — “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”
[01:01:58]Romans 12:1 — “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
[01:09:04]Hebrews 11:3 — “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”
[46:39]Observation questions- In Genesis 1, what repeated phrase shows how creation happens, and what pattern can the group see in the way God forms and then fills the world? [47:39]
- When Genesis 1 reaches verse 26, what changes in the wording and pace of the chapter when humanity is created in God’s image? [52:02]
- According to Romans 1:18-25, what did people exchange, and what did they begin to worship instead? [01:03:28]
- In Romans 12:1, what does Paul say believers are to present to God, and what does he call that act? [01:09:13]
Interpretation questions- Genesis opens with “In the beginning, God.” How does that shape the way a person understands everything else in the chapter—and even their own life? [44:34]
- Hebrews 11:3 says the universe was made by the word of God from what is not visible. What does that reveal about the difference between the Creator and everything created? [46:51]
- Humanity is made in God’s image for relationship and for purpose. How should that affect the way a person thinks about identity, value, and responsibility in the world? [55:39]
- Romans 1 describes sin as worshiping created things rather than the Creator. Why is that a deeper problem than merely breaking rules, and why does it eventually damage people and relationships? [01:01:44]
Application questions- Many people approach Scripture like stopping at a few overlooks, taking the picture, and moving on. Where is there a temptation to settle for a few familiar passages instead of really walking through God’s word and knowing God more deeply? [42:20]
- “God simply is” means God is not fragile, needy, or dependent. When life feels shaky, what created thing is most tempting to lean on for security instead of resting in the self-sufficient Creator? [45:41]
- Created things are gifts, but they are not the source. What “straw” is most tempting to treat like a “juice box” right now—comfort, money, sex, approval, control, achievement, or something else? How can the group tell when a good gift is starting to become an idol? [01:06:35]
- If worship is shown by attention, energy, desire, worry, and spending, what would an honest audit of everyday life reveal about what is most treasured right now? [59:41]
- Humanity was created for God’s pleasure and God’s purposes. In this season, where is there a need to stop asking, “What do I want from life?” and start asking, “How can life reflect God’s character and God’s rule?” [57:56]
- True worship is presenting the whole life to God as a living sacrifice. What is one concrete part of life that needs to be reoriented this week—schedule, entertainment, work, sexuality, relationships, money, or private thoughts? [01:09:34]
- The heart is restless until it finds rest in God. Where has restlessness been showing up lately, and could that restlessness be pointing to a place where the soul is asking creation to do what only the Creator can do? [58:12]
