Becoming Biblical Men: Priest, Prophet, Provider, Protector

Biblical manhood starts with humility under the mighty hand of God. A man of God is not an “aw, shucks” timid man, but a man who has submitted his desires to God’s desires and has seen there is no better way to live than the way God designed it. The call to fathers and future fathers is not just to say more things about God, but to have more of life shaped around God so children can see what God’s design looks like in a home.

The world lies about manhood. The father of lies has twisted manhood into the ball field, the billfold, and the bedroom, and even Christian culture has bought into it. The most important decisions are not education and career, because jobs can change and careers can move, but Christ and the spouse a person will live with are forever decisions. Biblical manhood must not check masculinity at the church door, but it must also reject the toxic version of manhood that comes from the world. Being a man is not toxic. Being a man of the world is toxic. A biblical man is not a dude who has refused responsibility.

God’s design in Genesis gives the foundation. God created humanity male and female in his image and likeness, and that design is not up for vote or self-definition. God formed Adam from the dust and breathed life into his nostrils, showing that mankind was designed for face to face connection with God, not distance from him. A man’s first position is direct connection with God, because a man cannot represent God to his people if he is not first abiding in God’s presence.

God gave Adam work to do, a will to obey, and a woman to love. Work is not a curse to gripe about, but worship to God, whether in a pulpit, a shop, an office, or a field. God’s one rule in the garden shows that rules did not enslave mankind, sin did. True joy is found in obedience to God’s will, not in chasing personal desires. The man of God becomes priest, prophet, provider, and protector, not only for wife and children, but also for the family of God. The question is not only whether a man wants to be that kind of man, but whether desire will become “I will.”
