Biblical Masculinity: Watchful, Courageous, Strong, Loving Men

Paul’s final words to Corinth land like short, heavy instructions: be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong, and let everything be done in love. The phrase “act like men” carries the weight of courage, not the idea that women are less. Paul calls the whole church into courageous, watchful, faith-rooted leadership, and that call especially challenges men to look like God’s kind of strength.

Watchfulness begins with eyes open to the return of Jesus. Jesus uses that alert language with the ten virgins, because nobody knows the day or the hour. Jesus also uses it in Gethsemane, where the disciples sleep while temptation is close. Watchfulness is not just looking around like a guard, it is praying awake, because “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Peter adds another layer: a sober spirit stays alert because the devil prowls like a roaring lion.
