God has given us an incredible gift in His Word, the Bible. Often, we treat it like an unopened present, sampling bits here and there but never fully exploring its depths. Yet, when we commit to truly receiving this gift by reading it cover to cover, it brings immense joy to the Giver. This act of fully engaging with Scripture is a profound way to honor God and experience the richness He intends for us. It transforms our understanding and deepens our connection with Him. [01:00:01]
James 1:17 (ESV)
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Reflection: When you consider the Bible as a personal gift from God, what might it look like to "unwrap" and fully engage with it in a way you haven't before?
Engaging with God's Word has a profound power to transform lives. It can move us from disbelief to belief, from ignorance to deep knowledge, and from a lukewarm faith to one that is truly on fire. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture daily, our understanding of God and His ways grows, leading to a deeper commitment and a more vibrant daily walk with Him. This journey reshapes our hearts and minds, drawing us closer to the divine. [55:32]
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Reflection: Reflect on a time when God's Word brought a significant shift in your understanding or faith. What was the specific insight or truth that impacted you, and how did it change your perspective or actions?
Reading the entire Bible lays a powerful foundation for the rest of our lives. It's like "tractor beaming" all the benefits, experiences, and joy that might accrue over decades into a concentrated period. This intensive engagement with Scripture establishes a firm spiritual bedrock, equipping us with wisdom and insight for whatever life brings. It sets us up for a lifetime of deeper understanding and a more resilient faith, built on God's unchanging truth. [01:01:41]
Matthew 7:24-25 (ESV)
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
Reflection: Considering the challenges and uncertainties of life, how might intentionally building your life on the foundation of God's complete Word provide greater stability and peace for your future?
When a church commits to reading God's Word together, something truly remarkable happens. It can ignite a "Holy Spirit wildfire" that spreads throughout the congregation and beyond. This shared journey deepens personal relationships, strengthens the bonds within the church family, and creates a powerful witness to the wider community. The collective engagement with Scripture fosters a vibrant spiritual atmosphere, impacting lives interpersonally and corporately, creating a compounding effect of faith and joy. [57:44]
Acts 2:42 (ESV)
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Reflection: How has participating in a shared spiritual journey, like reading the Bible with your church, impacted your sense of community and your personal faith? What is one way you could further contribute to this "Holy Spirit wildfire"?
We have a unique opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of those around us by simply inviting them to read the Bible. Many people, whether Christian or not, express a desire to read the entire Bible at some point. This makes it a low-risk, high-impact invitation. By extending a personal invitation to a neighbor, coworker, or friend, we can be instrumental in their journey of faith, leading to life-changing transformation and a deeper understanding of God's truth. Isaiah 55:11 (ESV)
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Reflection: Who is one person in your circle of influence that you could gently and personally invite to explore God's Word with you, trusting in its power to accomplish His purpose in their life?
Mandarin Presbyterian’s Cover-to-Cover Bible reading is portrayed as a watershed spiritual moment: hundreds committed to reading the whole Bible in a concentrated timeframe, producing measurable growth across personal faith, family relationships, community witness, and congregational life. The narrative traces how a decades-old ninety-day model, once diminished by illness and transition, was rekindled when a churchwide effort surged beyond expectations—spawning a newly revived ministry, the Ninety-Day Bible Journey. Personal testimonies illustrate a range of conversions and deepenings: agnostics moved to belief, long-quiet pewsitters found daily discipleship, and parent-child relationships were strengthened through shared reading.
Four dimensions of transformation are highlighted. First, individual faith is accelerated: knowledge gained from sustained reading often converts into commitment, discipleship, and a daily walk with God. Second, reading together reshapes interpersonal life—families and friendships develop new levels of spiritual conversation and mutual support. Third, public witness grows when readers visibly prioritize Scripture, becoming signs of hope in hospitals, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Fourth, the gathered church experiences catalytic change; a concentrated reading deposit compounds over time, yielding long-term spiritual fruit. The theological heartbeat is clear: God’s Word is effective and purposeful (citing Isaiah’s promise that Scripture will not return empty), and receiving the Bible wholly is pictured as accepting a gift long set aside.
Practical encouragement follows: first-time readers are urged not to hesitate—community structures and pastoral support make this season uniquely accessible—and those who started but did not finish are reassured that failure commonly precedes success. Veterans are invited back, with the claim that subsequent readings deepen understanding and joy. The address also reframes evangelistic effort as simple, personal invitations to join the journey; inviting neighbors, coworkers, even difficult acquaintances is portrayed as a low-risk, high-impact spiritual practice because once the whole Bible is read, it cannot be unread.
The result is both pastoral and prophetic: a renewed ministry birthed from communal discipline, a string of life-change testimonies, and a clear call to gather again beginning January 27—to read, receive, and let God’s Word accomplish its intended work in individual lives, families, and the wider community.
That's my story. It's what happened to me at 43, as Andrew mentioned, Becky and I were happily agnostic. But one day I felt unsettled in my disbelief, which made me mad. I liked my disbelief. It was very comfortable. And I wanted to go back to my disbelief. So I set out to read the bible in ninety days. But instead of disbelieving, one night I realized that something happened. I was believing everything I was reading. I'm a long time insomniac. But that night, I fell asleep and had the soundest sleep I'd had in decades. And I woke the next morning a changed man.

We haven't read the bible before, we've gossiped about the bible, all of a sudden we're reading it and we're in his word every day for a hundred days. Your knowledge will pick up and does. Knowledge to commitment, Commitment to discipleship. Discipleship to daily walk. One of the one of the main things that happens so often with people who've never read the bible before and then come do this, is they go they've been sitting in pews for years, sometimes decades. Now they do this reading and their faith goes from lukewarm to hot, really on fire. So it's it's wonderful to see. It's a wonderful part of the process. Dimension number two is your relationship with those around you.

Many of us have seen a compound interest graph. You know the one that shows what happens when you deposit a $100 today in interest in an interest bearing account? How it compounds day after day, year after year, until after a few decades, your deposit has become a small fortune. Similarly, in 2024, this church made a huge deposit in your relationship with God. That's the kind of thing that affects the church and the people in it forever, which makes it so important that you read the bible with your church again. All of it.

``God gave us the gift of his word, and most of us have at least respected it over time. But at some level, most of us have also treated it like an unwanted unwanted present. Think back to just a few weeks ago. Imagine that a loved one handed you a gift at Christmas beaming with expectation. But you look at it, tear a corner off the wrapping, see what the gift is, and then once identified, set it aside, perhaps to be enjoyed another day. Imagine the disappointment of the gift giver. That's what most Christians do with the bible. We sample it here and there, perhaps wallow in a favorite hotspot or two, but decline to explore further.

So in just a few weeks, the church will be giving you a new opportunity to read the entire bible as a community. How should you respond? Let me first address the first time readers. Don't hesitate. Just do it. Sign up. This will be the best opportunity you'll ever have to do this reading. You can't really depend on the church doing it again. There's a lot of effort that goes into doing this for you. Your church is mobilizing in a powerful way to help you do this life changing reading. Don't miss this chance. Yes. Life will happen during this period, but you'll be amazed at how God will bless you as you rearrange your life just a little bit to do all of this reading.

Finally, a note for those who started in 2024 but didn't finish. That happens. People who don't make it the first time regularly come back a little wiser and their chance of success is even greater than before. In life, failure often precedes success. You can do this. What if you've already done it the second time? If you did this in 2024, some may be thinking, I did it last time. Maybe I'll sit it out this time. To which I say, the second time is better.

For me, reading the bible in three months, the first time was a fire hose experience. I loved it, but there was a lot coming at me and in trying to keep up with it was really impossible. So I read it again And I found it so much better, so much more enjoyable the next time. I could connect the dots better. I was more knowledgeable about the reading, so much less overwhelmed. There are 3,500 names in the bible. The second time through, I was wise enough to realize I didn't really have to try to keep up with them. I was impacted by the message much more, and my relationship with him deepened in the process. It was a far more joyful experience.

James Edward Webster of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 2. The obituary goes on to recount a wonderful life of career, church, family, and community, including this. After reading the bible in ninety days for the first time starting in January 2008, James read the bible 64 times and started his sixty fifth reading on July 1. Most of us will not read the bible as many times as mister Webster, But we can be sure that he gained value and comfort and joy each and every time that he did the reading. And we will too.
