Confident in the Canon: Why Our Bible Is Complete

The question of the canon begins with confidence, because Scripture itself claims to be the very breath of God. Second Timothy 3:16-17 says the Scriptures are God-breathed, useful, sufficient, and given for the equipping of God’s people. The real question, then, is not whether God has spoken, but which writings are truly Scripture.

The issue presses hard because lies still get brought in to shake faith. One lie says the church suppressed the secret teachings of Jesus for power. Another lie says the early Christians were in mass confusion, fighting over a wide open literary free for all. The truth is that there was a very early core of New Testament Scripture, including the Gospels, Paul’s letters, James, and Peter, already received as the words of God.

Hebrews 1 sets the foundation: God spoke long ago through the prophets, and now he has spoken through his Son. John 10:27 adds the basic principle that Christ’s sheep hear and recognize his voice. The coming of the Messiah meant more Scripture would be expected, because when God does a great work, his words follow to record it, explain it, and lead his people.

The canon is a matter of recognition, not creation. The words of God do not become Scripture because men put them on a list. By their very nature, the moment God’s words are written down, they carry God’s authority. Human beings do not sanction them; they recognize them. God, in his sovereignty, preserved and assembled the Scriptures through ordinary means, not blind faith.

Content mattered too, because every writing had to line up with the orthodox teaching of Jesus. Circulation mattered because the churches received, copied, and passed around writings they recognized as apostolic truth.

Mere human writings could still be useful, like the Shepherd of Hermas or the Epistle of Barnabas, but usefulness does not make a book Scripture. False gospels, like Thomas, Peter, Mary, Judas, and others, were different. Their secret knowledge, their late dates, their fake names, their strange myths, and their Gnostic thread all revealed another spirit. That old lie from the garden kept showing up: humanity wants to be divine.

The closing of Scripture rests on apostolic authority and the finished shape of redemption. The apostles are dead, their close associates are dead, and no one today speaks with that same authority. The story has been given: creation, rebellion, redemption in Christ, resurrection, judgment, and new creation. God has spoken, and his people are called to hold fast and reject the lies.
