Beyond Our Limitations: When Little Becomes Much

Matthew chapter 14 sets before God’s people the word beyond limitation. The beauty of giving shows that a little gift may travel farther than anyone can imagine, like the young man in Kenya whose school money looked small, but God used it to carry him from grief into university. The presence of God with others in one mind creates room for a miracle, because when people gather around Jesus, the impossible becomes possible.

Matthew begins with grief. John the Baptist has been beheaded, and Herod’s family still carries that old evil that tried to destroy Jesus when he was a child. Jesus withdraws to a solitary place, and that withdrawal carries both danger and sorrow. The devil still moves like a roaring lion, looking for someone to attack, and the death of John reminds God’s people that life brings both grief and compassion.

Jesus sees the crowd and is moved by compassion. The crowd has crossed over to meet him, some of them sick, some of them desperate, maybe carrying loved ones on shoulders just to reach the other side. Jesus does not get mad that rest has been interrupted. Jesus goes back into the Father’s business and heals them.

The disciples look at the evening, the wilderness, and the crowd, and their compassion sounds reasonable: send the people away so they can buy food. Jesus answers with a command that exposes their limitation: “You give them something to eat.” The disciples count five loaves and two fish, and their math says it cannot work. Their resources are small, but the problem is not the size of the bread. The problem is forgetting the Source standing right there with them.

The five loaves and two fish become enough when they are placed in the hands of Jesus. Little is much in the hand of Jesus, and scarcity is overcome when the little is given to God. Jesus involves the disciples in the miracle, and as they keep serving, more keeps coming. What began as not enough ends with twelve baskets full.

Compassion in the name of Jesus cannot stop with feeling bad or saying, “I will pray for you.” Compassion must lean into action, prayer right now, giving what is needed, opening doors, feeding people, serving children, housing workers, and pointing every work back to Jesus. God is the source for every resource. God is not looking for success. God is looking for faithfulness, and when the resources are placed before the Source, God can stretch them beyond limitation.
