Paul’s warning in Colossians 2:8 starts with one plain word: beware. The enemy is in the business of spoiling and destroying everything good God has given. Satan cannot take the soul of a person who has been born again, but he wants to wreck that person’s testimony, marriage, family, church, peace, and joy. Satan does not show up saying that sin will destroy a life. Satan offers apples that look good on the outside, but they are full of worms on the inside.

Philosophy can spoil a believer because it rests on man’s thinking. Man’s thoughts have been corrupted by sin, while God’s thoughts and ways are higher than man’s. Human intellect is finite, and eternity, space, and the wisdom of God all show how limited human understanding really is. Human thinking also gets offended by absolutes, but God’s Word still says there is right and wrong. Self-made ideas like “do your own thing” and “do what makes you happy” put man’s opinion above the Creator.

Vain deceit is empty, false, and without anything solid to stand on. Satan is the father of lies, and he has had thousands of years to practice deceiving people. The solid rock is Christ and His Word, while all other ground is sinking sand. Lies about evolution, suicide as an escape, and alcohol as harmless recreation can look reasonable at first, but each one brings destruction and stands against the truth of God’s Word.

Traditions of men can be helpful when they are grounded in Scripture, but they become dangerous when they deny Scripture. Christ rebuked religious people for transgressing God’s commandment through their tradition. Man-made ideas such as infant baptism and salvation by good works cannot save, because salvation comes through faith in Christ alone.

The rudiments of the world call people to go with the flow, follow the crowd, and let culture decide what is right. God’s Word calls believers to stand where God stands, even when the crowd goes another way. Jude, Paul, and Peter all warn that deceivers will creep in, bring false doctrine, and try to carry believers away. God’s Word does not change, and it remains the only reliable, trustworthy place for instruction in church, family, and daily life. The church needs more than casual hearing of the Bible. God’s people need to believe it, study it, and be doers of it.
