God’s word is not merely comforting but is a powerful force that burns away falsehood, shatters illusions, and refines us, calling us to truth even when it is uncomfortable or costly. [21:45]
Jeremiah 23:29 (ESV)
“Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense God’s word challenging you to let go of comfortable illusions or falsehoods, and how might you respond to that refining fire today?
Following Jesus means being prepared for division and discomfort, even among those closest to us, as faithfulness to God’s truth sometimes disrupts old patterns and relationships. [22:14]
Luke 12:49-53 (ESV)
“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
Reflection: Is there a relationship or situation where your commitment to Christ’s way has created tension or division? How can you remain loving and faithful in the midst of that challenge?
God calls us to spiritual discernment, to recognize and interpret the signs of God’s movement in our lives and world, rather than missing what is right before us. [19:42]
Luke 12:54-56 (ESV)
He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”
Reflection: What is one area in your life or community where you sense God is at work, and how might you pay closer attention to discern and join in that movement today?
True faith does not settle for shallow comfort or easy lies but seeks the costly truth of God, even when it means standing against popular opinion or false prophets. [24:53]
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV)
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
Reflection: In what ways are you tempted to seek comfort over truth, and how can you practice faithfulness to God’s word even when it is difficult or unpopular?
Even when faithfulness leads to division or hardship, God’s Spirit sustains us, and the community of faith becomes a family that supports, encourages, and reminds us that we are loved and never alone. [35:26]
Romans 12:4-5 (ESV)
“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
Reflection: Who in your faith community can you encourage or support today, and how might you help someone else remember that they are seen, known, and loved by God?
Today’s gathering centered on the powerful biblical imagery of fire—God’s fire that both refines and divides, comforts and confronts. The readings from Jeremiah and Luke challenge us to recognize that God’s word is not always a gentle balm; sometimes it is a consuming fire, a hammer that shatters illusions and falsehoods. In Jeremiah, we hear a warning against false prophets who offer easy answers and shallow comfort, telling people what they want to hear rather than what God truly says. Jesus, in Luke, speaks of bringing fire to the earth and acknowledges that his message will not always bring peace, but sometimes division—even within families and close relationships.
This is not a call to seek conflict for its own sake, but a sober recognition that faithfulness to God’s truth can be costly. When we stand for justice, compassion, and the dignity of all people—especially the vulnerable and marginalized—we may find ourselves at odds with those around us, even those we love. The comfort of faith is real, but so is its challenge. God’s word calls us to move beyond self-serving dreams and easy lies, to embrace a costly truth that may disrupt old patterns and demand transformation.
Yet, even as fire divides, it also purifies and guides. God’s presence is both near and far, intimate and vast, sustaining us through the trials that come with faithful living. In the midst of division or estrangement, we are reminded that we belong to the body of Christ, a community where we are seen, known, and loved. Here, we support one another, holding fast to God’s word together so that no one has to carry it alone. Our loyalty is to God’s kingdom, and our strength comes from the Spirit, who gives us courage to stand firm even when it is difficult.
Let us resist the temptation to soften God’s word for the sake of comfort or acceptance. Instead, let us walk in the light and fire of God’s truth, trusting that even when the fire burns away what is false, it also makes room for new life, healing, and hope. God’s love will never let us go, and together, as a community, we can be faithful witnesses to that love in a world that desperately needs it.
Jeremiah 23:23-29 (ESV) — > “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
Luke 12:49-56 (ESV) — > “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”
God's word is fire. It's a hammer that shatters illusions. And Jesus acknowledges that this truth, kind of sadly, that that truth can cut right through friendships and even families. He's not saying, I demand that you fight, father, son, mother, daughter, mother-in-law, daughter, and he's not saying that. He's not saying, I came to make you all fight with each other. No. What he's saying is that it's going to happen. You need to be prepared to stand in God's world, to proclaim God's word, to follow the way of God, even if your little brother says, oh, that's stupid, and I won't get enough toys if I do that. [00:21:45] (56 seconds) #FaithThatDivides
We like to think of our faith, our belief in God, our relationship with God and Christ, Redeemer, Holy Spirit, Counselor. We like to think of all of that as comforting. And indeed, it is comforting. God is our refuge and our strength. Jesus is the good shepherd. The Spirit is our advocate. But faith is not only comforting. That's not all there is to it. Faith comforts, but it also confronts. God's word doesn't just soothe us. God's word challenges us. God's word convicts us. God's word demands something from us. [00:22:41] (52 seconds) #FaithThatConfronts
Jeremiah insists God's word is like fire and it burns away falsehood. It refines, it clears the ground, and it sets things right. And then Jesus in Luke, he refuses to sugarcoat the truth here. We had another section where he was calling people to follow him. And the people would say, well, okay, but, but first I have to go spend some time with my family. Or, okay, first I have to bury my father. Okay, first I have to do this. And as I told you then, it didn't say that the father had died yet. I always find that very interesting. That may not be what that was about, but I always find it, they're saying, I have to finish up all my stuff that's important to me here, now, first. Then maybe I'll follow you when it's convenient. And Jesus said, that isn't okay. [00:24:48] (59 seconds) #FireThatRefines
He came not to reinforce that status quo. He came instead to turn the world upside down, just like he turned those tables upside down. He came not to keep families comfortably united in old patterns. Because you know what? Sometimes those old patterns are no good. Sometimes they're wonderful. Some families are just the best place in the world to be. They're God following, they're all together. So that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about those situations when people get entrenched in their selfish and greedy and worldly habits with one another. And those habits are confusing each other. He doesn't come, Jesus doesn't come to keep the old things the way they were. [00:25:47] (49 seconds) #BreakingOldPatterns
Here's the truth. Divisions come exactly because you're trying to be faithful to God's Word. If you're trying to stand with the poor, and the vulnerable, if you're trying to stand with the immigrants, you're going to run into people who are saying, oh, they should just go back to where they came from, without even knowing whether they might actually come from here, if they're not immigrants. If you're trying to stand with people of color, you're going to run into confrontation, because you believe all people are created in God's image. In everyone we see, we should be able to see God. [00:29:45] (44 seconds) #FaithfulInTheFire
Following God isn't always smooth sailing, and isn't always popular, especially if you're actually following faithfully God's word, instead of what the false prophets tell you, what God's word is. Often God's word is a fire or a sword, a line drawn in the sand, but we truly are called to be faithful. God doesn't abandon us. God's word is not just fire, it is also light. Fire clears the brush, but it also can guide us through the night. Fire can divide, but it can also purify. [00:33:16] (41 seconds)
Our strength comes from the Spirit, the Advocate, the Counselor, gives us courage when we falter. Here's the good news. When we dare to stay faithful, even in the fire, God is with us. In fact, God can give us that fire within ourselves. That energy. That word to share. God is both near and far. God is both intimate and vast. Surrounding us in love and empowering us with strength. [00:34:35] (34 seconds)
And even when divisions come, we are still not alone. We belong to the body of Christ. We belong to one another. We belong to this blessed community. So here, here in this community. We become family for one another when other ties are strained. Here we remind one another that we are seen, we are known, and we are loved by God. And here we hold fast to God's word together so that no one has to carry it alone. [00:35:09] (36 seconds)
``So let's be faithful. Let's resist easy lies. Let's resist false comforts. Let's stand with God. With Spirit. With Jesus. Even when it costs us. Let's walk in God's word, which is fire and hammer and truth and light. And let us remember though the fire may divide, the Spirit will sustain us and God's love will never let us go. [00:35:45] (33 seconds)
