The sons of Solomon's servants: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Sophereth, the sons of Perida, the sons of Jaala, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel, the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth-hazzebaim, the sons of Amon. All the temple servants and the sons of Solomon's servants were 392. The following were those who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not prove their fathers' houses nor their descent, whether they belonged to Israel: the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, 642. Also, of the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzillai (who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name). These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but it was not found there, so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. The governor told them that they were not to partake of the most holy food until a priest with Urim and Thummim should arise. The whole assembly together was 42,360, besides their male and female servants, of whom there were 7,337. And they had 245 singers, male and female. Their horses were 736, their mules 245, their camels 435, and their donkeys 6,720. Now some of the heads of fathers' houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold, 50 basins, 30 priests' garments and 500 minas of silver. And some of the heads of fathers' houses gave into the treasury of the work 20,000 darics of gold and 2,200 minas of silver. And what the rest of the people gave was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas of silver, and 67 priests' garments. So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel lived in their towns. And when the seventh month had come, the people of Israel were in their towns. And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen,’ lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.’ For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, ‘Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’ So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, ‘Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.’ And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.”

And Moses commanded them, ‘At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at the Feast of Booths, when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place that he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.’”

[44:31]Galatians 3:7–9 “Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’ So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.”
[14:25]Observation questions- In Nehemiah 7, what kinds of people and groups are listed, and what happens to the men who cannot prove their genealogy or priestly descent? [11:49]
- In Nehemiah 8, what specific things show that the people were serious about hearing and understanding God’s word? [26:30]
- According to Deuteronomy 31:9–13, who was supposed to gather for the reading of the law, and what were they meant to do after hearing it? [24:07]
- In Nehemiah 8:9–12, how do the people first respond to the reading of the law, and what are they then told to do instead? [39:10]
Interpretation questions- Nehemiah moves from rebuilding the wall to identifying the people. Why does renewal begin by clarifying who belongs to the covenant community? [08:08]
- Galatians 3 says that those of faith are the sons of Abraham. How does that help explain the difference between belonging under the old covenant and belonging under the new covenant? [13:21]
- The people gather in Nehemiah 8 because God had already commanded such an assembly in Deuteronomy 31. What does that show about the way God’s people should seek guidance? [22:36]
- “The joy of the LORD is your strength” is tied to a day when guilty people are told not to stay in grief. Why is it important to understand this as the Lord’s joy in saving his people rather than mainly their joy in him? [42:10]
Application questions- Belonging to Christ also means belonging with his people. In what ways have you treated your faith as mainly private or individual, and what would it look like to live more openly as part of Christ’s covenant community? [16:20]
- Loving accountability is part of life together in Christ. Is there any area where correction from other believers feels threatening, annoying, or easy to avoid? What makes it hard to receive that kind of care well? [19:15]
- God’s people gather for guidance. What tends to crowd out steady engagement with Scripture in the company of other believers—fatigue, busyness, independence, discouragement, or something else? [35:33]
- Anxiety, anger, fear, and inner aggravation can be warning signs that the heart needs maintenance. What has been “squealing” in your life lately, and how have you usually responded to it? [32:31]
- It is possible to cover over heart trouble with noise, distraction, habits, or even respectable religious activity. What are the most common ways you mute what God may be exposing in you? [34:45]
- Growing in the knowledge of God should lead to worship, maturity, and mission. As you look at your life, is deeper Bible knowledge producing more love, joy, peace, patience, and holiness? Where does there seem to be a disconnect? [37:17]
- Conviction can lead either to performing, pretending, or believing the gospel. When sin is exposed, which way do you tend to go most naturally: trying harder, hiding better, or running to Jesus? What would believing the gospel look like this week in one concrete situation? [49:37]
