This question cuts to the very core of our existence and our eternal destiny. It is not a question about our accomplishments or our beliefs, but about the person of Jesus Christ. How we answer it shapes our entire life, our priorities, and our hope. It is a question that demands a personal response, moving beyond what others say to what we know to be true in our own hearts. Our confession of who Jesus is remains the foundation of everything. [51:15]
“When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’” (Matthew 16:13-16 NIV)
Reflection: As you consider the many opinions about Jesus in our world today, who do you personally say that He is? How does your daily life and the choices you make reflect that deeply held confession?
A true confession of faith in Christ leaves no room for ambiguity. It is a clear, unapologetic declaration that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, the Anointed One sent by God. This confession stands in stark contrast to the countless other ideologies and deities vying for our allegiance. It is a definitive statement that places Jesus above all else, acknowledging Him as the ultimate source of our salvation and hope. Such a confession is both bold in its proclamation and decisive in its commitment. [57:01]
“Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’” (Matthew 16:16 NIV)
Reflection: In what specific area of your life are you being called to make a more bold and decisive confession of Christ’s lordship, moving Him from a mere influence to the preeminent authority?
Our ability to see and confess Jesus for who He truly is does not originate from human wisdom or effort. This understanding is a gift, a divine revelation granted to us by God the Father through the work of the Holy Spirit. It is a spiritual truth that must be spiritually discerned, piercing through the darkness that blinds the minds of unbelievers. This confession is, therefore, a work of grace, reminding us that our faith is rooted in God’s initiative, not our own intellect. [01:07:13]
“Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.’” (Matthew 16:17 NIV)
Reflection: When have you experienced the Holy Spirit illuminating a truth about Jesus in a new or profound way? How does this remind you to depend on Him when sharing your faith with others?
The church is not built upon the shifting sands of human character or popular opinion. It is built upon the solid rock of the divinely inspired confession that Jesus is the Christ. This is the foundation that guarantees the church’s ultimate victory, ensuring that even the full force of hell itself will not overcome it. This promise provides immense encouragement, especially in times when the church appears weak or under attack, reminding us that the final outcome is secure in Christ. [01:16:27]
“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18 NIV)
Reflection: How does the promise of the church’s ultimate triumph encourage you to remain faithful and hopeful, even when you encounter resistance or discouragement in your spiritual journey?
Through our confession of faith in Christ, we are granted incredible access. We hold the keys to the kingdom of heaven, meaning we have access to the Father’s presence, His authority, and His power. This access allows us to partner with God in prayer to see His will accomplished on earth. Our confession is not just a statement of belief; it is the key that unlocks a life of purpose and partnership in God’s redemptive mission for the world. [01:19:59]
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19 NIV)
Reflection: What is one situation in your life or community where you feel led to use your “kingdom keys” through prayer, asking God to bind what is evil and loose what is good according to His will?
Matthew 16 frames a decisive moment: a public quiz that exposes competing opinions about Jesus and yields Peter’s climactic confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The scene at Caesarea Philippi, a pluralistic shrine-filled region, highlights how culture offers a buffet of false Jesuses—prophet, moral teacher, political ally, or spiritual genie—but none match the biblical Christ. The confession that names Jesus as Messiah carries weight because it identifies the anointed King who fulfills Israel’s hopes and inaugurates the church’s mission of liberation, healing, and proclamation.
That confession does not arise from mere human insight. The Holy Spirit illuminates hearts so people can truly see Jesus; divine revelation, not persuasive rhetoric, makes the confession genuine. Because the confession comes from God, the church that flows from it becomes a supernatural, Spirit-empowered movement rather than a human-made institution. Jesus promises that on the bedrock of that revealed confession he will build a church that perseveres: the gates of Hades will not overcome it. This assurance reframes cultural setbacks, persecution, and scandal—these may afflict the church temporarily, but they cannot determine its final victory.
Authority and access follow the confession. Jesus entrusts the church with “keys of the kingdom,” a practical means to exercise spiritual authority and partner with heaven’s purposes through binding, loosing, and bold prayer. The confession therefore fuels mission: clear Christ-centered testimony, Spirit-wrought conversion, resilience under trial, and confident engagement with the world. The point lands with pastoral urgency—clarity about who Jesus is matters for both eternity and everyday living. The biblical Jesus demands preeminence over politics, causes, and cultural idols; when the church keeps that confession central and prays for the Spirit’s work, it gains irresistible influence and accomplishes the Lord’s mission in the world.
Yes. We have our conservative Jesus. He's cloaked in an American flag and he wears a red cap. We have our genie Jesus. He's just simply there to give me health, wealth, and prosperity. We have our pride Jesus. He's ultra liberal and he waves a rainbow flag. Come on, somebody. We have our activist Jesus who's there to fight for justice and social change, but he fails to make disciples. But I want you to know in an age of religious confusion where distractions are amongst us, we what would distinguish us from the rest of the pack is a clear cut bold confession that Jesus is the Christ.

Jesus is saying the gates He's using gates here as a metaphor so as to describe the chains of death. You remember in certain Psalms and maybe the book of Jonah where he's describing himself being ebbed away and locked up in the chains and the throws of death. In essence, Jesus is saying that the grave has released its stranglehold on us because Jesus has conquered sin and death once and for all at the cross. Therefore, there is now victory in Jesus name and not even death itself can stop us.

He is the Christ and as such, he's not a cosigner for my ideological cause. No. He's not an endorsement of my own personal endeavors. Jesus Christ is the king of kings and the lord of lords and as such, he deserves preeminence in all of my passion, in all of my praise, and he should be the final focal point in all of life's pursuits. I'm talking about Jesus this morning. I'm a little bit happy about Jesus. I don't know about you.

But you know what else it is? Our confession is a spiritual confession. In fact, so utterly spiritual is this confession that you can't even confess it from the heart and mean it without help from the holy ghost. Follow me into this text. In verse 17, notice what what Jesus says and does as a result of Peter's confession. Jesus was a little bit excited here because he says in verse six seventeen, Jesus replied, blessed are you Simon son of Jonah for this was not revealed to you by man but by my father who is in heaven.

Reporter says, okay, well, what's the difference between Hinduism and Christianity? The guy says, Jesus Christ. By now, the reporter is getting agitated. He says, well, what did you gain then by becoming a Christian? And you guessed it, Jesus Christ. Yes. I want you to know that when it comes to Christianity, Jesus Christ is the point of it all. He is the reason we sing. He is the reason we celebrate.

And with this faith my friends, and this testimony that we have, we become a church of irresistible influence and irresistible impact right here in the Reisterstown, Owings Mills area and across the globe if we stay focused on Christ. That's the promise from today's word. In fact, you could summarize it again. The church Jesus builds carries irresistible influence because simply because of the confession that it possesses. And our confession is Jesus above all gods. Jesus above all kings. Jesus, the king of kings, the lord of lords and the one who saves souls even today.

We may be persecuted for our beliefs, but at the end of the day, we win. This text tells me that come hell or high water, the church that Jesus builds cannot be stopped. It's gonna persevere to the end. First of all, I want you to notice something again in this text that's pretty interesting and if you read past it too fast, you'll miss it. Jesus says, I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock, I will build my church.

Keys mean access. And what Jesus is saying is that you and I have access to the father, access to the kingdom of heaven, access to his authority, and even through prayer we have access to partner together with Jesus to bring heaven's agenda down to earth. Praise God for kingdom access. For kingdom access. Do you know what kind of power you hold as a child of God, as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ? You hold incredible power and it's simply through your confession of faith in Jesus Christ.
