God is faithful, and he calls believers into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord. Paul’s plea to the Corinthians follows from that calling: the church must not break into pieces, but be joined together in the same mind and judgment. Fellowship is not an optional extra. It belongs to the relationship God has already given his people in Christ.
Spiritual maturity takes a lifetime. Time moves fast, but believers are still called to walk steadily, reflect Christ, and embrace his principles. That steadiness does not rest on personal strength. A believer may stumble and still get up because the hand of God is helping. God is still working on his people, so forgiveness must have room in their relationships. The Holy Spirit supplies the humility, wisdom, and love needed to deal with people, including people who make loving them hard.
Paul confronts a church in danger of division. God calls his people to be unified, not uniform. Disagreement does not have to become division. The church belongs to God, is set apart by Jesus, and depends on Christ rather than the personalities serving within it.
Grace also confirms the believer’s testimony. Nobody stands in the church on the strength of intelligence, credentials, or personal importance. God’s grace has brought each person there, and that same grace enriches speech and knowledge. Knowing better ought to lead to doing better, especially in how believers talk to one another.
The Corinthians’ loyalty to favorite leaders exposes the trouble. Paul, Apollos, and Cephas cannot take the place of Jesus. Christ alone died, rose again, and sits at the Father’s right hand making intercession. Fellowship holds together when Jesus comes first. The call is therefore both to receive him as Lord and Savior and to let that relationship govern life with his people.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Steadiness Depends On God's Helping Hand. A believer’s fall does not prove that God has stopped working. Spiritual steadiness rests on a relationship with Jesus, not on the ability to remain strong without help. Because maturity takes a lifetime, believers need both the humility to receive forgiveness and the willingness to extend it. [56:12]
- 2. The Spirit Makes Difficult Love Possible. Some people make loving them hard, but their personality does not cancel the call to love. The Holy Spirit gives believers a servant’s heart, a humble attitude, and the ability to fellowship with one another. Dependence on the Spirit becomes especially necessary where irritation might otherwise set the terms of a relationship. [1:00:02]
- 3. God Calls For Unity Not Uniformity. Believers can disagree without becoming divided. The church belongs to God and is built on Jesus Christ, not on everyone having the same preferences or personality. Unity keeps that shared foundation in view instead of allowing differences to break the body into pieces. [1:14:08]
- 4. Grace Changes How Believers Speak. God’s grace does more than give believers a testimony about surviving hard times. Paul connects that grace with being enriched in speech and knowledge, which makes the manner of speaking a serious part of fellowship. Knowing what to say and how to say it can resist division in the church, the home, and marriage. [1:22:15]
- 5. Jesus Matters More Than Favorite Leaders. Loyalty to a favorite leader becomes dangerous when it determines whether a believer will gather with the church or receive biblical truth. Paul directs attention away from human names to the Christ who died and rose again. Fellowship finds its proper center in Jesus, not in a preferred personality, pew, or song. [1:31:16]
