John’s words in 1 John 2:3-6 give assurance in a book full of certainties. A person either knows God or does not know Him, walks in light or walks in darkness, obeys His Word or merely says the right things. The false teachers claimed fellowship with God while walking in darkness, claimed they had no sin, and even claimed they had not sinned. Their profession did not match their life, and John calls that a lie.
True belief goes past agreeing with facts about Jesus. Faith means commitment, and saving faith shows itself in a changed life. God grants repentance when He saves a sinner, and repentance becomes the way of life for the believer. Sin may still be a struggle, but Jesus Christ the righteous is the believer’s Advocate with the Father. Christ does not deny the believer’s sin. He declares that He has paid for it.
Obedience gives evidence that a person has come to know Christ. John says, “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.” Keeping does not mean a one-time effort or checking off a list. Keeping means continually guarding His Word, holding it fast, and having a consuming desire that His commands be honored. Faith obeys the gospel, turns from idols, and serves the living and true God.
Love supplies the motive for that obedience. Jesus says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” God’s commandments are not burdensome because obedience grows out of relationship. God pours His love into the believer’s heart by the Holy Spirit, and that love is perfected as it becomes visible in love for God and love for the brethren. Sentimental words and mystical claims cannot replace moral obedience.
Abiding in Christ brings a third proof. Abiding means more than a position or a claim. It speaks of fellowship, communion, dependence, harmony, and friendship with Christ. The person who says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same manner as Christ walked. Christ walked in humility, serving His disciples by washing their feet. Christ walked in dependence on the Father, saying, “Not My will, but Yours be done.” Christ suffered without returning evil for evil and committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.
Obedience does not cause salvation, but it accompanies salvation. Assurance should not rest merely on something claimed years ago. John directs attention to the present pattern of life: obedience to God, love from God, and abiding in God. True faith does what God says from the heart because it has been changed by Christ.

Key Takeaways
- 1. True faith shows itself in obedience [12:30] Obedience is the fruit of faith, not the cause of salvation. A believer does not earn acceptance with God by keeping His Word, but God’s saving grace produces a real desire to keep it. Faith that never affects the direction of life is not the faith John describes. [12:30]
- 2. Repentance remains the believer’s way [05:23] Salvation does not mean sinless perfection, and John does not leave fallen believers without hope. Jesus Christ remains the Advocate who has paid for the sins of His people. Repentance is therefore not a one-time doorway into the kingdom but the ongoing response of a heart that belongs to Christ. [05:23]
- 3. Love for God obeys His Word [17:42] Love for Christ is not proved by sentimental language alone. Love receives Christ’s commands as the words of the One to whom the believer belongs. Even hard commands become a delight because God’s Spirit gives both the love and the power to obey. [17:42]
- 4. Abiding means walking as Christ walked [29:24] Abiding in Christ involves fellowship, dependence, harmony, and friendship with Him. Christ’s life becomes the pattern: humility instead of pride, service instead of self-exaltation, and submission instead of insisting on personal will. A claim to know Christ must be tested by a life that increasingly resembles His. [29:24]
- 5. Present obedience strengthens assurance [38:32] Assurance is not meant to rest only on a past profession. John calls believers to examine the present evidence of obedience, love, and abiding. God’s love at work in a changed life gives real and biblical assurance.
