Day 1: Becoming What We Behold at Life’s Table

We are all in a process of becoming—shaped not by sudden transformations but by what we consistently fix our eyes upon. Just as a family grows into shared identity around a dinner table, our hearts are molded by what we worship. Idols creep in when we demand God conform to our preferences rather than surrendering to His unruly grace. The golden calf incident reveals how quickly even the redeemed replace trust with control. Lasting change comes not from self-effort but from centering Christ’s glory. [05:19]

Like them, we often prefer gods who serve our agendas rather than the God who demands surrender. Sermon Summary

Every person, every family, every team, and every church is becoming something over time. The big question is not whether formation is happening, but what is doing the forming. Jeremiah gives the warning plainly: people who follow worthless idols become worthless themselves. The heart reflects what it worships, and whatever glory gathers a people will eventually shape that people.

Exodus 32 shows Israel gathering around the wrong glory. Israel had seen the Nile turn to blood, Egypt collapse, the Red Sea open, bread fall from heaven, and the mountain burn with God’s fire. Yet forty days later, Israel asks Aaron to make gods. The golden calf is not really a desire for a different god as much as a desire for the true God on Israel’s own terms. The calf gives Israel a god that is visible, predictable, controllable, and useful. That same impulse is still alive whenever the heart edits God into someone easier to follow.

The broken covenant exposes the seriousness of idolatry. God says, “your people,” not because he has forgotten his promises, but because Israel has violated the covenant at the deepest level. The question hanging over the whole scene is whether a holy God can dwell with an unholy people. The answer rests not on Israel’s faithfulness, and not on any human strength, but entirely on who God is.

Moses steps in as mediator and prays by appealing to God’s own promises. Moses does not minimize sin or make excuses for Israel. Moses says, in effect, “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember your covenant.” Faith learns to talk back to God using God’s own promises.

Exodus 33 shows Moses understanding what Israel has forgotten: the greatest gift God gives is himself. The promised land without God’s presence would be empty. Moses would rather stay in the wilderness with God than move forward without him. So Moses prays the great prayer, “Show me your glory.”

Exodus 34 gives the answer. God reveals his glory not first with fireworks, but with his name and character: compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. This is the glory that forms God’s people. John later says that this glory has been seen fully in Jesus Christ. Moses caught a glimpse, but Christ gives God a face. The Spirit now turns eyes toward Jesus, and people become like what they behold. The real question is not only what idol needs to be removed, but whose glory is at the center.
