Jesus sends his disciples out like sheep among wolves. The gospel brings free forgiveness and grace, but its reception will not always be gentle. Arrests, hatred, and even division within families belong to the opposition his followers should expect. At the beginning of the end, believers need their eyes wide open both to the hostility around them and to the promises on which they stand.
Christian freedom can become an excuse for complacency. Believers can leave the work to “the church” and forget that they are the church, the body of Christ. Each member has a part in making Christ known through words and actions. Faith is not something to keep tucked away while a broken world needs the gifts God has given.
The image of snakes and doves holds wisdom and innocence together. Jesus calls his disciples to be careful, alert, and wise in their conduct without twisting the truth or treating others harshly. Opposition is no reason to abandon gentleness and respect. Neither is fear a reason to remain silent. The Father will speak through the Spirit, who has been given through baptism.
Suffering can weigh believers down, especially when the hurt of family and fellow Christians becomes a burden carried without prayer. Yet standing firm does not depend on personal strength, knowledge, or determination. Christ willingly went to the cross bearing sin, and his resurrection proved his victory over death and the devil. No condemnation remains for those in Christ, and nothing in creation can separate them from his love.
God’s Word supplies solid promises when the world, Satan, and the sinful nature press their lies. Familiar passages learned in childhood become needed truth in the hour of trouble. The Holy Spirit uses that Word to strengthen, defend, and sustain faith. The heart of the Reformation is Christ himself, with his Word dwelling richly among believers as they encourage one another and stand steadfast to the end.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Freedom Can Hide Spiritual Complacency. The absence of severe persecution does not necessarily mean faith is flourishing. Freedom can be taken for granted while believers leave Christian witness to an institution and forget their own place in Christ’s body. Every member has a function, and the gifts of forgiveness and grace are meant to reach others rather than remain tucked away. [33:28]
- 2. Wisdom And Innocence Belong Together. Jesus joins the snake and the dove rather than allowing either image to stand alone. Christian witness calls for alertness and careful words, but not slyness, distorted truth, or harsh treatment of others. Such conduct makes room for the difference Christ has made to become visible and for his love to be spoken. [36:19]
- 3. The Spirit Sustains Faltering Believers. Trials can expose the limits of optimism, knowledge, and personal determination. The ability to stand comes instead from the Spirit given through baptism and working through God’s powerful Word. Christ’s cross and resurrection give suffering believers a foundation stronger than their ability to keep their own spirits up. [46:03]
- 4. Remembered Scripture Meets Present Trouble. Familiar Bible passages are not merely childhood lessons left behind after catechism instruction. Their promises become urgently necessary when the world throws lies at believers and their own sinful nature begins to give way. The Holy Spirit uses that stored-up truth to defend faith and keep Christ’s promises clear when life seems to be falling apart. [49:19]
