Bible ReadingEphesians 1:4 “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love”
[02:29]2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
[26:09]Genesis 1:1-31 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. Then God said, ‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’ Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. Then God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear’; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth’; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day. Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth’; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Then God said, ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.’ So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind’; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ And God said, ‘See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food’; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
[18:10]2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
[36:52]Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,”
[33:38]1 Peter 1:2 “elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.”
[34:51]Observation questions- In Ephesians 1:4, what does God choose His people to be, and when does that choosing take place? [02:29]
- In Genesis 1, what parts of creation are made before human beings are created, and what does that order show? [21:53]
- According to 2 Corinthians 5:21, what does Christ become, and what do believers become in Him? [26:09]
- In Hebrews 9:27, what comes after death, and what does that rule out? [33:38]
Interpretation questions- If God chose His people before the foundation of the world, what does that suggest about where a believer’s identity really comes from? [28:07]
- Genesis 1 shows God preparing a world before placing people in it. How does that shape the way a group understands God’s purpose in creation and His care for human beings? [23:34]
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 says righteousness is found “in Him.” Why does that matter when people are tempted to base their standing with God on effort, failure, or spiritual performance? [30:01]
- Hebrews 9:27 and the call that today is the day of salvation put weight on the present moment. How should that affect the way a person thinks about delaying repentance or putting off faith in Christ? [34:29]
Application questions- God’s choosing reaches back before personal failure, family history, and even time itself. Where is the group most tempted to build identity somewhere else, and what would it look like this week to rest in being God’s own? [32:18]
- In Christ, “sinner” is not the final name tag for the believer; “saint saved by grace” fits the new life better. Which label comes more naturally in everyday thinking, and how does that show up in prayer, confession, or the way a person speaks about himself or herself? [36:12]
- The cross is the place where sin was dealt with and righteousness was given. When guilt rises up, what is the usual response—trying harder, hiding, or coming back to what Christ has already done? [30:17]
- Anyone in Christ is a new creation. What is one old way of thinking, speaking, or living that needs to be treated as gone instead of carried along into the new life? [36:52]
- Creation was prepared as a place for people made in God’s image. How might that change the way the group looks at daily life, work, family, the body, or the ordinary world around them? [23:48]
- Today is the day of salvation. Is there any area where someone has been delaying obedience, repentance, or a clear response to Christ, assuming there will always be more time? [34:14]
- God sees His people in Christ as holy and with unstained innocence. What makes it hard to believe that personally, and what would change if that truth was taken seriously this week? [35:48]
