God delights in using the most unlikely people to accomplish His purposes, often choosing those whom the world would overlook or dismiss. Just as David, a young shepherd boy, was chosen to face Goliath when no one else believed in him, God calls and equips ordinary individuals to do extraordinary things for His glory. You may feel unqualified or inadequate, but God’s power is made perfect in weakness, and He can use your life in ways you never imagined if you are willing to trust Him. [26:34]
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NIV):
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel unqualified or overlooked? How might God be inviting you to trust Him to use you in that very place today?
Spiritual champions are motivated by a cause that is bigger than their own comfort, success, or reputation—they are compelled by the mission of God and the advance of the gospel. David’s courage to face Goliath was rooted in his conviction that God’s name and honor were at stake, and he could not stand by while God was defied. When you recognize that God’s purposes are greater than your own, you find the courage to step out in faith, even when it’s difficult or costly. [31:46]
1 Samuel 17:29 (NIV):
“Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?”
He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before.
Reflection: What is one “cause” or purpose in God’s kingdom that stirs your heart? How can you take a step today to serve that cause, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone?
God never calls us to a task without also providing what we need to accomplish it. He gives us His Word, His Spirit, and spiritual gifts so that we are never alone or unequipped in the challenges we face. Like David, who went to battle with only a sling and stones but with full confidence in God’s provision, you can trust that God will supply exactly what is needed for the work He calls you to do. [28:49]
2 Peter 1:3 (NIV):
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Reflection: In what area of your life do you feel you lack what is needed to serve God? What is one way you can rely on God’s provision and step forward in faith today?
True champions for God are those who hold nothing back—they offer themselves completely, trusting God with the outcome. David didn’t just offer his skills or resources; he offered his very life, stepping onto the battlefield with no guarantee except his faith in God. When you surrender all that you are and all that you have to God, you open the door for Him to do immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine. [38:02]
Romans 12:1 (NIV):
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Reflection: Is there something you are holding back from God—your time, your gifts, your plans, or your heart? What would it look like to give that area fully to Him today?
The difference between fear and faith is where you place your focus. Champions do not deny the reality of giants, but they choose to see God as bigger than any obstacle or challenge. When you fix your eyes on God’s power and faithfulness, the giants in your life lose their power to intimidate or paralyze you. Even if the giants remain, God’s presence and promises remain greater still. [37:17]
Hebrews 12:2 (NIV):
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Reflection: What “giant” in your life has been capturing your attention and causing you fear? How can you intentionally shift your focus to God’s greatness and faithfulness today?
It is a joy to share with you the journey God has led us on in Guyana, where the vision is simple but profound: a church in every village, so that every person has the opportunity to hear the gospel clearly. Since 1999, we have seen God do remarkable things in some of the most remote and challenging places—places with no roads, no electricity, and no running water. Yet, in these villages, the light of Christ is shining, and lives are being transformed. Through children’s ministries, youth camps, medical clinics, and the training of local leaders, God is building His church, often in ways that surprise us and always in ways that humble us.
The heart of what we do is rooted in the conviction that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. The story of Rommel, who came to us as a teenager and is now a key leader, is a living testimony to the power of long-term faithfulness and discipleship. We have seen the fruit of staying in one place long enough to watch children grow into leaders, and even the next generation stepping up to serve.
Reflecting on the story of David and Goliath, it’s easy to think the lesson is simply that God will always remove our giants. But sometimes, the giants remain. The deeper truth is that God is in the business of making spiritual champions—not just a select few, but anyone who will take Him seriously. Champions are not defined by worldly success or recognition, but by faithfulness, courage, and a willingness to see a cause greater than themselves.
God chooses the unlikely, gives us what we need, and never sends us out alone. Champions are found at the front lines, willing to give themselves fully, to ask the hard questions, and to focus on God rather than the obstacles. The call is not to be someone else, but to be faithful with what God has given you. Every believer is gifted and called to serve, and greatness in God’s kingdom is available to all who will trust Him and step forward in faith. The world needs champions—right here, right now. Will you be one?
Don't look for what you do good and say, well, I could, you know, do this for God. God often uses what you don't think you could do at all. You know, and God can do exceeding abundantly above all that we could ask or think. And so I'm just amazed after all these years what God has done. [00:16:50] (16 seconds) #GodUsesTheUnlikely
You may not be a Billy Graham, I'll never be a Billy Graham, but I can be an Edward Kimball. I can tell one man, one young man, a teenager, a child, I can tell that one person. And you have no idea what God can do with that one person that you lead to Christ. That's how you become a champion. [00:24:04] (21 seconds) #GodChoosesTheFoolish
First of all, what we learn about God. And let me just share a few things that I find about God. First of all, God chooses the most unlikely people. Now, I think I'm one of those unlikely people. Honestly, it's just amazing that what God has done, I don't even like it when people say, wow, what a ministry you've built over the years. No, I've built nothing. God has chosen, in fact, the Bible says in 1 Corinthians chapter 2, it says that God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. God has chosen the base things of this world. That's me. [00:26:00] (35 seconds) #BeyondOurLimits
I have been preaching a lot of years, and I've heard a lot of Christians say, I can't do that. I can't do this. I want to tell you something. We've got to get past this thing of what I can do. In fact, God is really not interested in what you can do, but he's really interested in what he can do through you. And sometimes what we do is we say, well, I've got this much education, I've got this much money, I've got this much ability, and we keep ourself in that little bubble. But God wants to take us outside of that. [00:27:40] (31 seconds) #GodsGiftsWithinUs
Be faithful to what God has given you. I've heard people say, well, I can't teach, or I can't preach, or I can't serve, or I can't do this. Let me just give you a real quick Bible lesson. The day that you receive God into your life, every one of you, if you're a Christian here today, the day that you receive God into your life, you receive something called a spiritual gift, or probably more than one gift. A spiritual gift is really an enablement to serve God. It's an absolute lie when somebody says they cannot serve God. [00:35:35] (41 seconds) #FocusOnGodNotGiants
There's greatness in everyone if you just let God take over. So I'm going to challenge you today to be a champion. To be a champion for God. We need them. There was a time when the church was penetrating nations to get the gospel to places. I've heard this saying, we're closed country. You know, there's no such thing as a closed country to God. [00:39:58] (26 seconds) #YouAreCreatedToChampion
You might be on the longest losing streak, and you say, preacher, I can't be a champion. But you can. Because God can do things that you can't even imagine. God can do so much more than you could think about. And you were created to be a champion. And we need champions. Right here. Cottage Grove, Oregon. Riverside Church. We need some champions.
