Bible ReadingRomans 10:15 “And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’”
[33:40]John 13:1-17 “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, do you wash my feet?’ Jesus answered him, ‘What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.’ Peter said to him, ‘You shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.’ Simon Peter said to him, ‘Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!’ Jesus said to him, ‘The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.’ For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, ‘Not all of you are clean.’ When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.’”
[36:32]Jonah 1:1-3 “Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.’ But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.”
[38:50]Exodus 4:10 “But Moses said to the LORD, ‘Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.’”
[39:29]Jeremiah 1:6 “Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.’”
[39:45]Observation questions- In Romans 10:15, what is called “beautiful,” and what makes it beautiful in that verse? [33:40]
- In John 13, what actions does Jesus take when He washes the disciples’ feet, and how does Peter respond at first?
- What do Jonah, Moses, and Jeremiah each say or do when God calls them? What pattern shows up in all three of their stories? [38:50]
- What gifts of God are named as ways Christ cleanses, forgives, and strengthens His people? [43:53]
Interpretation questions- Romans says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news.” If “preach” here means proclaim, how does that widen the calling beyond the pulpit and into ordinary Christian life? [35:05]
- Jesus washing dirty feet gives a picture of more than simple kindness. How does that scene help explain what sin does to people and what Christ does for sinners? [38:00]
- Moses says he cannot speak, Jeremiah says he is too young, and Jonah runs away. Why do those kinds of excuses feel so familiar, and why does forgiveness in Christ outweigh them? [40:30]
- The law tells the truth about sin, but it does not make sinners righteous before God. Why is that difference between law and gospel so important when speaking to hurting or guilty people? [35:37]
Application questions- When has there been a moment to say something about Christ, but silence felt easier? What excuse showed up in that moment: fear, feeling unprepared, feeling unworthy, or something else? [40:09]
- Clean feet are sent out with clean news. Who is one person in everyday life right now who may need to hear a word about Christ’s forgiveness, not just advice or correction? [45:01]
- Many voices in the world proclaim power, comfort, success, bigger possessions, or shame and condemnation. Which of those messages tends to crowd the gospel out in the heart most often? [42:08]
- Baptism says that Christ washes sinners clean and claims them as His own. How might remembering Baptism change the way a Christian sees personal guilt, shame, or old sin this week? [43:41]
- The gospel should be the hottest news in town because Christ died and rose again. What makes that news sometimes feel ordinary, and what helps bring back joy and wonder in it? [40:42]
- God’s Word carries the power, not personal skill or eloquence. How might that truth give courage to someone who feels awkward, inarticulate, or weak when speaking about Jesus? [44:10]
- Beautiful feet also come with hands that reach out to those in need. What might it look like this week to join a gospel word with a simple act of mercy for someone who is hurting? [45:25]
