2026_08_30 Blessed to Be a Blessing

Paul grounds the call to serve in “the mercies of God.” Romans 1 through 11 tells the story of people who were dead in sin, under just wrath, and yet loved by God through the gift of his Son. God has made enemies into children, washed sinners clean, and given everlasting life that no eye has seen and no mind can fully conceive. Paul’s “therefore” means that everything which follows grows out of grace already received.

Romans 12 calls believers to offer their whole selves as living sacrifices. God no longer asks for an animal on an altar, but for lives given over to him, holy and pleasing in response to his mercy. The renewing of the mind changes how believers see God, themselves, and the world, so that they can recognize his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Paul pictures the church as one body with many members. Each part has a different function, and each member belongs to the others. Sober judgment keeps a person from getting puffed up and also keeps a person from diminishing the place God has given. A driver without a truck or an engine cannot get anywhere, and neither can any one leader, team, or individual carry the whole work of a congregation.

God gives grace gifts to every believer. Prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, generosity, leadership, mercy, hospitality, care, music, practical help, and work with children all matter to the full ministry of Christ’s body. Paul does not divide the church into the gifted and the not gifted, because all are gifted and all are needed. Grace gifts leave no room for boasting, but they also leave no room for sitting back and calling a God-given contribution unimportant.

Hebrews adds that believers need more than individual effort. The faithful God calls his people to hold unswervingly to hope, but he also calls them to spur one another on toward love and good deeds. The gathered church and the smaller circle both give life: worship, the Word, communion, prayer, friendship, honest relationships, and interactive study of Scripture. Coals spread apart die out, but coals brought together burst into flame.

Life giving community and meaningful service become the practical response. God blesses his people with salvation, presence, abilities, and relationships so that those blessings might be shared. Faith takes the next step into a place of service, a Life Group, Alpha, prayer, care, youth ministry, or another needed work. God blesses those who serve, and he makes them a blessing to others.
