Day 1: The Daily Discipline of Becoming Someone New

When Jesus said “Follow me,” He invited Matthew into a life of intentional apprenticeship. Holiness isn’t a passive state but a daily choice to walk with Christ through ordinary rhythms—reading Scripture, praying, and showing up even when progress feels slow. Just as muscle grows through repetition, spiritual maturity comes through small, faithful steps that reshape identity. The Bible becomes not just a book but a mirror revealing who God says we are. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Day 2: Creating Tables Where Heaven Meets Harassment

Jesus didn’t wait for sinners to clean up before sharing a meal with them. He built tables in the middle of messes, turning tax collectors’ homes into revival spaces. Our assignment isn’t to preach at people from pulpits but to pull up chairs in their chaos—whether gyms, coffee shops, or front porches. True impact happens when we stop demanding change and start offering Christ’s presence. [01:16:59]

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”

Day 4: Five-Mile Famous: Being Bethesda Where You Stand

The church isn’t a building but a people carrying healing to their zip code. Just as Jesus walked villages noticing needs, we’re called to study our neighborhoods—learning demographics, struggles, and hidden hungers. Impact starts by asking “Who’s already here?” rather than waiting for crowds to come. Your five-mile radius is your first mission field. [01:29:22]

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

Day 5: Your Scars Are Someone Else’s Survival Guide

Jesus didn’t hide His scars—He used them as proof of resurrection. Our failures, divorces, and health battles aren’t secrets to bury but testimonies to deploy. When we deconstruct how God carried us through darkness, we build ladders for others trapped in similar pits. Your most painful chapter could be someone’s hope-filled prologue. [01:31:18]

Sermon Summary

The believer’s priority to be holy is not a call to sit back, recline, and get comfortable in God’s presence. Holiness carries an assignment. Impact carries an assignment. Divine possibilities carry an assignment. The heavenly awaits, and that means this is the opportunity of a lifetime for people who are still breathing.

Matthew 9 shows Jesus moving through cities and villages, teaching, proclaiming the kingdom, and healing every disease and affliction. Jesus sees crowds that are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd, and his compassion turns into a call for laborers. The harvest is plentiful, but laborers are not just workers. Laborers bear down and give birth to something. The table, the relationship, the hope, the healing, and the opportunity already planted inside must come out.

Jesus sees Matthew at the tax booth and says two words: “Follow me.” Jesus does not first focus on Matthew’s problem. Jesus sees Matthew. Jesus then sits at a table with Matthew, tax collectors, and sinners, showing that the kingdom does not begin with aggression or religious performance. Mercy makes room. A table makes room. Sitting down makes room for people to breathe, talk, and be known.

The church’s move into new territory is therefore not just a change of location. Bethesda is called to become five mile famous, to see the people in the neighborhood, know who is there, and serve them on purpose. Bethesda is not only a building that offers hope and healing. Bethesda is carried by people. Every believer can become a place of hope and healing wherever life already happens: on the block, in the gym, walking dogs, around tools, in the garden, in a kitchen, at a ball game, or beside a young parent who needs help.

Discipline prepares believers for that assignment. Disciples must be disciplined enough to show up daily before the God they say they love. The Word must move beyond being words heard and become flesh in a life that dwells among people. The Spirit of Christ in believers turns wounds, failures, divorce, struggle, wisdom, skill, and lived experience into a table where somebody else can be made whole.

The harvest does not need perfect stories. The harvest needs people willing to say, “You can use it.” Christ’s Spirit is not ashamed of the story, because Christ already saw it from beginning to end. The opportunity now is to see someone, invite someone, walk with someone, sit with someone, and let the Word become flesh.
