Paul’s list in Galatians 5 names love first because love starts and ends with God. God loved every person before anybody could do anything for Him, while sinners were still enemies, and while many would keep rejecting Him. John 3:16 shows that God loved the whole world, from Job to Judas, from the saint to the sinner. God’s love does not depend on who loves Him back, who obeys Him, or who seems worthy.
Agape is the love the Spirit produces. Agape is selfless, sacrificial, unwavering, and unconditional. Agape chooses to love regardless of the other person’s response. God sets that standard because God is love, and His children cannot claim to know Him while refusing to love people the way He loves them.
John’s words make the matter plain: anybody who says, “I love God,” but hates a brother or sister is a liar. “Brother” does not leave room for a small circle of people. Brother means family, fellow believer, fellow countryman, and then anybody else. Everybody is somebody God commands His people to love. Jesus calls love a commandment, not a suggestion, and says that love is how people will know who belongs to Him.
Jesus also tears up the usual human definition of love. Love is not merely loving people who are easy to love, keeping a record of what somebody did back in the nineties, or protecting comfort, resentment, and pride. Matthew 5 calls God’s children to love enemies and pray for those who persecute them, because God sends sun and rain on both the just and unjust. The Good Samaritan exposes the search for loopholes. The lawyer asked, “Who is my neighbor?” because he wanted an exemption. Jesus answered by showing mercy to somebody in need and then saying, “Go and do likewise.”
Love does not mean giving harmful people unlimited access, putting somebody back in a position to abuse, or excusing evil behavior. Love means refusing to hold hostility, hatred, and ill will in the heart. Deep wounds may require therapy, prayer, hard conversations, boundaries, and time. But God’s command still stands.
The Holy Spirit brings the person to mind who is hard to love because that is where surrender has to happen. Pride, emotions, thoughts, and mouths must be yielded to the Spirit. Christ calls His people to abide in Him, because branches cannot bear fruit apart from the vine. God prunes what keeps love from growing, and love becomes the first fruit that makes the rest of the cluster visible.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s love removes every excuse God loved sinners, enemies, deniers, and people who would never love Him back. That love takes away the excuses built around somebody else’s behavior, offense, or lack of apology. God does not ask His children to invent a feeling. God commands them to reflect the love already given to them. [60:11]
- 2. Agape chooses love regardless Agape is not controlled by emotion, comfort, or whether another person deserves kindness. It is a committed love that does not change simply because somebody hurt, ignored, or disappointed the one loving them. This kind of love is impossible through flesh alone, which is exactly why it is fruit of the Spirit. [61:27]
- 3. Love does not seek loopholes The lawyer wanted to know who could be excluded from the command to love. Jesus answered with a neighbor who crossed every expected boundary and showed mercy. Love stops asking, “Who do I have to love?” and starts asking, “Who needs mercy from me?” [83:49]
- 4. Boundaries can still carry love Love does not require unlimited access, renewed exposure to abuse, or pretending that wrong was right. Deep wounds may need therapy, wise boundaries, and honest work before reconciliation can happen. But protection from harm must not become permission for hatred, hostility, or ill will to stay rooted in the heart. [80:28]
- 5. Abiding produces the fruit of love Christ says that a branch cannot bear fruit by itself. The heart that keeps drifting from Christ will keep feeding resentment, pride, and the works of the flesh. The heart that abides in Him receives strength to forgive, make the call, have the conversation, and obey even when the outcome is uncertain.
