Bible Reading
1 Kings 19:1-18 “Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
[06:00]Exodus 33:18-23 “Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
[25:31]Philippians 3:12-14 “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
[37:41]Observation questions
- What details in 1 Kings 19 show the sharp contrast between Elijah’s victory on Mount Carmel and his condition under the broom tree? [10:43]
- What practical care does God provide for Elijah before giving him instructions for the journey ahead? [21:50]
- When God asks Elijah, “What are you doing here?” what reasons does Elijah give for being in the wilderness, and what belief about himself appears in his answer? [13:44]
- What does God reveal about Himself through the wind, earthquake, fire, and gentle whisper, and what does He tell Elijah to do afterward? [26:18]
Interpretation questions
- Why might God meet Elijah first with sleep and food rather than correcting his fear, despair, or desire to die? What does this show about God’s care for people who are overwhelmed? [21:38]
- Elijah believes he is the only faithful person left, but God reveals that seven thousand others remain. How does isolation distort Elijah’s view of both his responsibility and God’s work?
- Elijah expected the fire on Mount Carmel to lead to a national turning point, but Jezebel’s threat followed instead. Why is it important that Elijah brings his disappointment directly to God rather than hiding it or walking away from faith? [20:34]
- How does the gentle whisper at Sinai challenge Elijah’s expectation that God must always act through dramatic, visible moments? How might this connect with Paul’s call to press on in Philippians 3:12–14? [27:12]
Application questions
- Elijah’s collapse came after a great victory. Are there times when you have felt especially tired, discouraged, tempted, or emotionally vulnerable after a demanding season, achievement, or spiritual high? What helps you notice those warning signs sooner? [12:41]
- God cared for Elijah as an embodied person through rest and food. Is there an area of physical care—sleep, meals, pace, exercise, medical care, or time away—that you may be tempted to dismiss as unspiritual but need to take seriously? [22:13]
- Elijah withdrew from people and began to believe that everything depended on him. When you are under pressure, do you tend to isolate, carry burdens alone, or feel that no one understands? What is one honest step toward trusted Christian community you could take this week? [13:21]
- Is there an unanswered prayer, loss, delay, or broken expectation that has left you disappointed with God? What might it look like to bring that disappointment honestly to Him instead of pretending it does not hurt? [17:33]
- God’s quiet presence sustains people through ordinary days and long seasons, not only through miraculous moments. What practices help you become still enough to listen for God’s voice through Scripture, prayer, worship, or quiet? [28:24]
- God did not leave Elijah under the broom tree; He renewed him and gave him meaningful work to do. What is one small, faithful act of purpose—at home, in the church, at work, or toward another person—that may be your next step forward? [32:35]
